Most venues have those rules for good reason. I think my friend had the same issue and they were able to use piping and put it close to the wall without making holes in anything. Her parents were loaded and they paid for it, so I don’t know how much it cost. I say decorate with the linens, flowers, centerpeices, and for the walls get uplighting instead of draping if you can’t afford or if the decoraters don’t know how to do it.

Did you get the approval in writing?  Maybe that would help you argue your position with the coordinator.

We had a huge open space and we weren’t allowed to hand anything from the ceilings or the wall. One option is pipe and drape, which can look beautiful but can be very expensive. We ultimately opted for uplighting because it ended up being an easy all-in-one fix for our boring space–it was expensive, too, but it seemed like more bang for our buck.
