Too close. 😉
Too close. 😉
We’re about a 15 hour drive/1,000 miles away from his parents, and 11 hours/700 miles from mine.
I live 8,000 miles away from both sets of parents. And while it has it’s drawbacks, it has been nice to get to focus on “us” during the first year of marriage. Where we live (Hong Kong), real estate is INSANE, so our first apartment was 450sq feet (we are soon moving into something around 700 – near luxurious in HK!!). Certainly wasn’t how I envisioned the first place I would live as a married woman, but it has been a great experience. I have learned to live with a man in a TINY space, and while there are days when I wish I had a door to slam (studio living problems), it has been good for us. We never officially lived together prior to getting married and moving across the world! And not to mention, any house we buy when back in the States will feel like a mansion now 😉
That being said, when asked if I will be starting a family out here, I really don’t think I would want to be far away from our parents once we have children.
This is based purely on a plan for the future, as SO and I currently live about 3300 miles apart…
We would be approximately 3300 miles away from my parents, which I don’t want, but unfortunately has to happen. Luckily, my parents love traveling and plan on coming to visit every year. We’ll be about 50-100 miles from Future In-Laws. Close enough to visit for a day, but far enough that we don’t have to.
My IL’s are about 30 minutes away and my parents are less than 5. So both are pretty close. We had an option to buy a house closer to my IL’s which would’ve made us 30 mins from my parents but we (or I lol) decided it was better to live near my parents. I’m so glad we did that because now that we have a baby, my mom is always over helping. I’m sure she would’ve come 30 minutes out, but it’s so much easier for her to be 5 minutes away.
Our first home is a townhouse but it’s pretty big..almost 2500 sq ft.
My father in law and his wife live twenty minutes away, by car. My mother in law and her boyfriend live a further ten minutes away by car. My sister in law and her family live two hours away, give or take on traffic.
My sister lives in the same town as us and my brother lives about 10 minutes away (granted he’s gone over to Finland to be with his girlfriend – unsure if he’ll return).
Literally. Luckily we all get along and they are the type to keep to themselves and let us be, so it shouldn’t be a problem for us. Sounds like you will be similarly close. We will be about 10 miles from my parents.
