So, I just got home from the Social Security Office to finally change my name. I’m applying for a couple new jobs and I want to start a new job with a new name just to make it easier. So, I went to the one in Downtown SJ and I had a lady who seemed like she was going to be very easy going. She was going to let my name be how I wanted, so I was so excited! It would have been [First] [Middle] [Mom’s Last] [Maiden de NewLast] I know it’s kinda long and crazy, but it’s what I wanted to do so I wouldn’t lose any of my family names. (I got the idea of adding the de from Mrs. Hydrangea’s post & I can’t believe they were going to let me do it!)
It was fine and set, then after she has me sign off on it she says that the DMV might not be able to fit all that, so they would have to shorten it. She told me something scary like they would cut off half of one of my last names. UH NO! Not cool, I wanted my names to match on all my legal documents, so we went back and forth for a while. I tell her fine, then I want my name to be [First] [Mom’s Last] [Maiden] [NewLast]. I just replaced my middle name from birth with my mom’s last name and also used my maiden so I would have two middle names. Again, we go back and forth for a while because she tries to tell me that name won’t work because it’s too long…WTF? It’s the same number of letters if I had used my old middle and my maiden. She keeps printing out the form while we are still talking and I keep refusing to sign because it’s not right. FINALLY she goes, "FINE!" Does the name how I want, and is ready to send me on my way…but she refused to give me a copy of what my name is now, so I’m off to the DMV with a printout with the original version of my new last name. So, I hope she got the name right, but really I’m not even sure what it is anymore. Can’t wait for fun at the DMV! I’m a little worried after reading Mrs. Hydrangea’s experience!
I was shocked that I didn’t have to go through the courts to change my name any of the ways I wanted, so I was at least happy that she was willing to at least accomodate my ideas…at first anyway! I just thought it was odd that she didn’t have a problem making my name so long, but when I proposed a shorter version she had a heart attack about it.
Oh, and ty parent’s names were not right in her system. Basically on my birth certificate and my marriage license the names are correct, but not in hers. She didn’t want to change it because she said it’s been that way for over 20 years, but I told her no that it wasn’t right and showed her my proof. My dad’s name should have read Jose, but read Jos and my mom’s was Maria C, but her first name starts with C and her middle is Maria…so weird. Don’t even know how that ended up, I was just ready to get out of there by then.
Sorry, for the long post, but how did the name change go for the rest of you? What offices did you visit and what were your experiences there? Did you have anyone go from pleasant to really rude? (Don’t you know I gave it right back, though, lol!…I was just waiting to someone to come kick me out of that place, haha. I know she works for the government, but shoot, you get the respect you give!)
