  • Wedding: May 2012

We were engaged in December 2010 and about a week later, my FI’s father passed away suddenly. With all of the shock involved with the sudden death and tremendous amount of arrangements that needed to be taken care of for the estate, we decided a 2012 wedding would be best. We wanted to get married in spring or summer instead of winter or fall, and that would only be a few months after our engagement. When we started looking at venues, the one we chose only had May 26, 2012, June 2, 2012 and another date in Sept. 2012 available. June 2 was out of the question since my sister’s brother-in-law was getting married that day and her husband was in the wedding. Fall seemed so far away, so we settled on May 26. There was nothing really special about picking the day but now i love the fact that its in spring instead of summer. However, the weather here (in Saskatchewan) can be very unpredictable in spring. We could have snow, rain or sun on our wedding day!!

@CarolinaCola: We just had a range of things to work around. His job, my school/graduation/finals/bar exam. We picked a few ranges that we’d liked (Sept-Oct 2011, Feb-March 2012, or Aug 2012). The main factor deciding how large our guest list would be. Then it was calling around to see what venues and churches could fit us all and when they were availabe. Looked at which dates paired up, how it worked in our schedule, and then we were set.

It was quite a process lining up all of the places we would like with dates that didn’t conflict with my school schedule, but there is no particular special or good reason we picked 3.10.12 other than convenience and availability.

@CarolinaCola: Hehe, same here. I guess that was one of the ‘guides’ I used: “Don’t put a “fun day” on a “fun day.” πŸ™‚

Our first thought was obvs our anniversary but that’s in the winter and my husband wanted a summer wedding. So we went with the date we first met. Our venue ended up having another event on that date so we chose an earlier weekend.

I know others that choose dates with mathematical significance?

  • Wedding: March 2012

Not so romantic here. My FI’s vacation cycle is in May, so having the wedding in late April allows him to use time off from this cycle, and honeymoon from the next.

I really wanted late May when it wouldn’t be as chilly but c’est la vie.

I don’t think picking the date has to be a huge hassle or have a big significance – it will be significant because it’ll be your anniversary!  I knew I wanted a spring wedding because I feel like we have so many bdays/anniversaries, etc in the fall.  I was thinking April, but the venue that we both loved was a bit pricey, and we only wanted a Saturday wedding.  They gave us a discount if we had our wedding in March since its not as busy.  March 31st is the last Saturday and we got it!  Took us about 3.5 weeks from the time we got engaged to the time we booked our venue.

Another thing to keep in mind when setting your date is your venue.  We had a couple of dates in mind in May/June 2012, and once we had looked at and decided on a ceremony and reception venue, chose whichever they still had available.

And on a more random note, I also wanted May b/c I really want a lily of the valley bouquet, and that’s peak growing season for that particular flower πŸ™‚

  • Wedding: July 2012

We picked a date in about 5 mins.  We went to go see the venue that we wanted.  They had most dates available.  We had to have a summer wedding cause of my job and his job. We decided July cause there are too many bdays in August to deal with.  Then it was process of elimination based on other events in July and we ended up with July 21, 2012.  It works out perfectly because it gave us time to go on our honeymoon.  Any later we would not have had that opportunity.

June 20th is our anniversary.  He proposed on that day and we will be married on that day (right on our 11th year)
