We got engaged about 6 days before Christmas, so I made these ornaments and wrapped them up and gave them to our families as the surprise last gift of the day to announce it. It was fun! Then i posted the pic of the ornament on FB for everyone else.

As prolific as I am on social media, I’m massively not into the obnoxious “look at me/us” creeyative posts – I told my mum in person, other close friends and relatives either via private message or in person depending on if I was seeing them, and then just updated my status on facebook for everyone else

I facetimed my mom and squealed like a banshee. My fiancé proposed during the evening, so I then slept on it and we went to my future in-laws… where I just laid my hand on the table casually, and my future Mother-In-Law took one look at my ring and said, “That’s a nice promise ring.” … We then announced we were engaged and the shock on their faces was real… then they got upset because they weren’t told in advance. The next time we visited them, we got the happy “I want to see your ring!” reaction, thank God.

I no longer have any social media profiles. But at the time, I had Facebook. I changed our relationship status to “Engaged” with a photo of just his hand holding my hand with the ring. We took it at the very top of a hiking trail in Hawaii, so the background was the ridge and blue ocean far below. I loved that picture!

I didn’t add any captions because those sound too cringeworthy to me.

In the 10 years that I had Facebook, that was my most “liked” post. Haha

I’m not big into the whole self-congratulating thing on social media. We actually kept our engagement to ourselves for a few months as our family and close friends found out. When we got close to christmas we took a picture together and used an app to make it look like a Christmas card and said “Happy Holidays from the (soon to be) Lastnames” and posted that.

We called/texted our immediate family and then just changed our relationship status on facebook from “in a relationship” to “engaged” so that’s how the majority of friends/extended family found out. I think ring pictures our tacky so even though I’ve taken pictures of my ring I’ve never uploaded them.

Telling my mom went something like this:

“oh by the way, I’m getting married. “

“You aren’t either! You’re way too young!”

“I’ll be 28 at the time of the wedding, and you were married with 2 kids by the time you were my age.”

“That was different! It was another time and…..oh, what the h*ll, what kid of dress do you want to want? “

It was accidentally announced to out friends when we were at a gathering and a ex-girlfriend of my husband didn’t know he was attached and ran up and planted a big kiss on him, asking him “so, what’s new?” She had been told by others that hadn’t seen him in a while that he was unattached, they didn’t know about me yet. I stood by the sidelines laughing as my husband told her he was engaged. about 50 people heard him tell her, so after that the news was out.
