We had a very small ceremony, only 25 people if you counted the minister, his wife and our two photographers….then later that summer we had a big backyard bbq as a reception/housewarming…it was a ball!

On the wedding day itself, we had a lovely three course dinner with champagne with our two witnesses.  The meal lasted like 3 hours!

A month after the wedding, we had a very casual get together with local friends (as in no one flew in, so no family were present) which was to celebrate my recent graduation, our new deck, our marraige and fall (the season before skiing).  Really it was just an excuse for a party.  I didn’t want it to be wedding related at all.  I thought adding all those other celebrations would prohibit people from bringing a gift but it did not.  We planned it in a week.  I could have gone without the party, but I was saying for like 5 years I was going to celebrate when my degree was finally over.

We are close to 50 and this is a second marraige for both of us.  Engaged March 2012 and was going to do a big party and dance outside at his place in the country… but then my house hasn’t sold, and it still costs a lot of food, dance floor etc.

Nov 2012 … we decide to book a gorgeous cabin 5 hours away …  but I’ve been struggling with how to pay for our 3 sons (in their 20s) to help them with hotel costs. And closest cake decorator 91 miles away… and not all of our friends would be there and it would be just a 30 min to one hour deal but still cost about $1500 … or close to $2000 if we bought our wedding “party” dinner that night.

I was getting stressed at trying to figure out how we would pay for all this , and mainly – if it was worth it.  All the time, there would be NO money for a honeymoon!

So it gets to be New Years … and we both just came to the conclusion — ELOPE !!! CRUISE!!!!

We have not said anything , except that the plans for the cabin are off and we’ll just do something simple here instead ( original date was 3-23-2013 …….

BUT now we ‘re driving to Galveston TX on 3-2 and going to just have a small wedding on the beach on the morning of 3-3-2013 , have a local photographer take about an hour or two of photos , then board a 7 day cruise that afternoon!! We’ll have a blast on a Royal Carribbean cruise to Cozumel, Grand Cayman, and Jamaica !
AND for the same price as the wedding!

I am already feeling better and having FUN planning 7 days of fun than 3 hours of formality.

AS FAR AS TELLING EVERYONE …  we have kept it totally secret . Our son’s don’t know, or my Maid/Matron of Honor ( that actually sort of bailed on me) but he’s kind of concerned that his bestest friends will be upset … I say they’ll get over it and be happy for us. They have a new grandbaby due about the time we’re going away.

We plan to call them after we actually check in and board the ship! Maybe even Facetime them or text them a picture and then call them and our kids and Maid/Matron of Honor .
