So tonight I was at the mall and I saw an alterations shop and nail salon in one, called Allure. I went in and watched the alterations lady working with a client and generally like how this client was treated, so I asked for a business card and asked if she worked on wedding dresses to which she replied, “yes.”
I was wondering before I made any decisions about choosing an alterations shop what it is you bees did to choose your alterations store? What was special about the store that made you decide “This is the one!” Did you ask any questions? If so, what did you ask so I can ask my future alterations store.
Please give me any tips you might have.
I am so clueless when it comes to anything to do with alterations so sorry if this post within itself is vague. >_<

I found a gal on Thumbtack.com – she lives just down the road from me. I went and met with her at her house. She had her wedding dress and her daughters’ wedding dress there that she had made by hand. They were really nicely made and she talked a lot about how she was able to customize whatever she wanted. She had a real love for sewing and I could see she had enough talent from the dresses I could look at in person.
Also, and this was a biggie – she could make custom bridesmaids dresses for me (that’s actually what I originally went to see her baout). That is what I chose her for, the alterations to my dress are secondary.
Doesn’t hurt that her prices are PHENOMENAL!! But that wasn’t my primary concern, it’s just a perk. More expensive doesn’t always equal better – there are lots of hidden gems doing work out of their home when it comes to seamstresses.

@NAvery: Thank you for your input! I’ll check out that URL. That is a good idea too by the way, to look into seamstresses that work from home. ^_^

I chose the lady that worked at the store because she’s done the work for a few of my friends’ wedding dresses and she did a great job! I would do some searching online and see if you can find any reviews.
