So, there aren’t loads of options in the area where I’m getting married. That made our decision easier, although it also meant that our choices were a little uninspired. The photographer we selected had recently photographed the wedding of a daughter of my dad’s friend (got that straight? hah!), so my dad’s friend gave us the "secret code" so that my fiance and I could view all the preview photos on the photographer’s website. She was most compatible with the aesthetic we want — not cutesy, a little arty, but able to do the old-school portraits that my dad seems determined to have.

It is great to  go with family and friend recommendations to find your photographer, but doing your own research on photographers is also helpful. Make sure you  have a few narrowed down that you think you could book, and then meet with them. It’s important to feel comfortable around someone who will be with you  your entire day!

Ask the necessary questions in an email or or phone call ,making sure you know package prices and details.  So you can focus on  "getting to know them" better when you meet, and make sure to compare other photographers packages so you have an idea of their style and prices.

Be wary of the photographer who seems like they are only trying to sell you somethingg, even though this is a business, you should get along and have a good repoir with your photographer!

The photos on photographers sites are a representation of their style and ability, usually some of their best work, if you dont really like some of their pictures, don’t go with them!

He did my senior portrats when I graduated high school (seven years ago).  We had such a hard time picking out the pictures we wanted to buy because all of the proofs were so great.  He was so great to work with…very laid back. His wedding portfolios are impecable.  It was pretty much a no-brainer.

In addition to this, we (my Fiance and I) personally know a kid who interns with him.  His pictures are amazing, but he just didn’t have enough experience for us to trust him alone with taking pictures for our wedding. So, having him as a second shooter is another plus.

I went on the Wedding Photojournalist association website and then looked through all of the photographers that I thought I might be interested in over a 1,000 mile radius (we thought we might need to fly someone in).

It ended up that we found the most spectacular photographer in the town that we’re getting married in… and after 10 months at looking at photos from other weddings and other photographers, ours is still my favorite of all time.  I take that as a great sign!

I love my photographer!  And I found him in a kind of roundabout way.  I bought several local magazines, and contacted some of the photographers I like (including one I had also read about on weddingbee).  Most who were already booked gave me references to someone else.  I really liked one of these, but it turned out there was a snafu so that after we had talked a few times he realized he was already booked.  But he recommended the one who ended up being my photographer…who happens to be from Out of Town and out of state actually.

I’d recommend going through websites of local photographers.  If you like pretty much everything on their website, then get in touch and ask for availability, ballpark pricing, and links to a complete wedding (super important!!).  Only if you like their complete weddings would I recommend proceeding further to discuss packages and pricing.  There were several photographers whose websites I liked but whose complete weddings I or my Fiance did not.  I didn’t say this directly (more like, we decided to go in a different direction or something), but I think it’s really important to find a photographer who will capture your whole day the way you want it, not just the highlights.  Not so hard for a photographer to know they should be there for the cake cutting…it’s the question of whether they are able to capture the small moments that might be special to you.

I had originally narrowed down many of my options from a search on WPJA site (is that the right acronym?). I was super excited about my first choice but right before I sent in my contract, another potential client who she hadn’t heard from in a few months sent in her contract right before mine! It wouldn’t have been an issue, but the date was right before mine and it would have been a destination wedding for the photog and that was just too tight of a turnaround. Boo! At the same time I’d had my eye on one of the photogs used by a bee on WB and so I got over my doldrums, contacted her immediately and booked her! I’m really happy and excited to be using her but I think there are some minor things I would have liked to see that aren’t her style, mainly some more fine-art esque post processing and composition, but I might just find another photog later on down the line to do an anniversary shoot that satisfies that part of me =).

It’s a funny story actually, back in 94 my best friend, Jenn, and I met these two air force guys that were best friends. I married one and she married the other one, Chris. We were each others maid of honors/best men in our ceremonies, that were four months apart. Well, my husband (now ex-husband) ended up cheating on me with another girl while I was passed out in the same bed on my 21st birthday (CRAZY STORY) so I divorced him. In 2006, I finally found the love of my life and we started planning our wedding for 2008. I knew immediately that I wanted Jenn to be a bridesmaid, which she accepted without hesitation. She then told me that Chris had recently started a photography business and has been doing lots of weddings. I immediately knew that I wanted him to photograph our wedding and he was thrilled when I asked him when he would do it. Besides, he was going to be there anyway with Jenn so why not give him the chance to do what he loves. It was awesome that they both could be apart of this wedding because it meant so much to have them there. He made the experience wonderful and took awesome photographs for us. And we got a great discount…..LOL.

Initially we looked at the list of local Cancun photographers that the hotel provided but we didn’t like any of them.

So we went to a few photographers from Wedding Photojournalist Association that we admired and contacted them for availability & pricing. In the end we went with an award winning photographer -Sergio.

Being photographers ourselves, we were very picky with our selection. :) Sergio is reallly awesome to work with & we totally love our wedding pix.

By The Way later on I realized he is also Mrs. Lily’s photographer!. 🙂 http://vendors.weddingbee.com/Sergio_Photographer
