I just graduated with my higher degree, we made a move across the country and once our house sells we’ll have a pretty decent chunk of change in the bank. I’ll be working at one of the best women’s hospitals and will have great benefits and maternity leave, so it seems like the right time. We’ve also been married 4 years (together 12) and have done our fair share of travelling.

I saw you mention that you want to buy a bigger home, but not in Chicago. I’m from the suburbs – but have you thought of looking over in northwest Indiana? The commute isn’t terrible and you can’t really beat the housing in St. John, Dyer, Munster, etc. Worth checking out!

The biggest thing was that for once in our entire almost 13-year relationship, we both had baby fever at the same time. So we took a big vacation and then when we returned we started planning. We wanted to make sure we had zero debt. Then we wanted to save at least six months of expenditures in an emergency fund. Then we wanted to save around $1,500 for baby-related purchases (crib, maternity clothes, stroller, etc). Then we wanted to make sure we can afford our deductible. After that we started trying.

redheadbride2016 :  D.H. and I are both PhD students, and while it’s a little chaotic both being in school and having a baby, the flexibility is really nice. I took ~3 months off, and now that DS is 5 months old I’m fully back in the swing of research. The one thing that was really hard hard is D.H. was in the middle of the term when DS was born, so during finals when DS was 4-8 weeks old I pretty much had to do everything baby care. I think grad school is actually a great time to have kids. I would suggest finding a good support system that can come stay with you and/or drop by a lot to help if you’re going to be due when D.H. is still in classes. Especially if you have a csection, it’s really great to have some day to day help.
