Hi Bees! I’m sorry if this is an old question, but reading some proposal stories today got me thinking – do ladies generally get their ‘dream’ proposal, or do things not go as planned?
I didn’t expect a lot for mine, but I thought maybe some sweet nothings would be expressed as the ring was presented as Fiance is very sweet on the sly – lo and behold, he blurts out willyoumarryme in the quickest proposal that has ever been! So are proposals with flowers, sweet nothings and perfect settings more common, or are lounging-on-the-couch-with-no-makeup-on, coming-back-from-the-gym proposals more common? Feel free to share a funny story
I was in my pajamas and almost didn’t pay attention because DWTS was on :/ But it worked for us because we are huge home bodies and I’m pretty much always in sweatpants. We were decorating our Christmas tree and spending time together and it felt very right for us. He definitely wasn’t kneeling on rose petals or serenading me, but it was a great proposal for us.
Well I ruined my proposal. He was planning to propose for Valentines day at the Baltimore Aquarium and a week before that I was in a terrible mood. I wanted my ring lol, see I picked it out with him, went with him to pick it up a few weeks later and watched as he put it in the safety deposit box 2 weeks before he proposed. He even talked to my family about it and was just waiiiiiting. I had enough waiting by that point and I didn’t know he was going to propose on our Valentines trip! We were getting ready to go to a Super Bowl party and I decided at the last minute I was just in too bad of a mood to be able to handle hours of football with my family. He said he knew what would cheer me up and got the ring out and proposed right then. I was laying on the couch being pouty and he got down on one knee beside me all sweet…. I definitely said yes and was super happy and ready to go to the party. I may have messed up the original proposal but the way he did it was all I wanted all along. I hate surprises and I hate public proposals so he ended up getting bonus points for springing it on me the way he did and making it perfect!
One day at work i found out from my friends in the jewelery department (i work in Finance) that my boyfriend had come in. Later that night he was teasing me saying he had a surprise for me, I was so excited and definatly got my hopes up that my surprise was a special ring 🙂
Fast forward to New Years Eve (and no the teasing hadnt stopped) my boyfriend took me to a very nice dinner, got down on one knee and presented me with… a promise ring. -_- He told me that he loved me and wanted to spend his life with me but as he just graduated and started a new job he wanted to wait a while. Needless to say i was a little disappointed but in love with my ring 🙂
Several hours later he took me to our old highschools grandstand to watch the fireworks to count down to the year 2012. All snug in our big blanket, he leans over and whispers “I cant wait. Marry me?” And was holding my beautiful engagement ring out to me. I SAID YES. and still wear both rings (promise ring on right hand)
Like @HappilyEverAfter54, I ruined my proposal. Fiance was proposing to me on Valentine’s day, which also happened to be the day my friend’s foster children were returning to a less-than-ideal parent.
So there had been a lot of stress and tears leading up to this, and fiance and I were getting ready to go around to their house and say goodbye and fiance was dragging his feet, saying he had to hide my present for tonight. In the end, I just snapped and said “Give me the bloody present and let’s just go!” So poor fiance pulled out the box and said “Here’s your present,” and we both stood there awkwardly for a few minutes until he said “It’s an engagement ring.”
Having said that though, I still love the proposal – the timing sucked, because I was alternating between miserable and ecstatic for the rest of the day. But the proposal itself was really sweet – I can’t imagine him proposing any other way.
I wasn’t very surprised for mine. I knew something was up that day and he told me a few months earlier that it was coming soon. Also, we were at a concert before he did it and I had a headache. lol So I was a little grumpy..
I do wish there was some element of surprise but it didn’t make it any less special! I will never forget that night.
We had been talking marriage for AGES, I helped pick the ring, I knew when it was in his apartment, and I just HATED waiting. So one day I was just like “lets get engaged tonight please”…I had said this A LOT lol and on this particular night he said OK!! So when we got home he got down on one knee, said lovely things and I got to be a fiance!! I just wanted to be engaged to him, I didn’t need a big show. So I think it was pretty perfect. I do feel awkward telling peoople the story though because most dont get it!
My proposal was perfect. I sure didn’t look great; I had on a really shabby old sweatshirt and we were out for a walk. He said the most amazingly sweet speech (that I can’t remember a WORD of because I was so excited and amazed that it was happening), got on one knee, and asked me to marry him under this amazing sunset.
Our wedding was pretty awesome in its own right, but the proposal was just between us and was so perfect.
We had talked about marriage but were waiting a year to get engaged so we could have the wedding we wanted. He had just purchased his house from his ex, and bought her out, so we were a little tight on money .. or so I thought. I woke up one morning with a beautiful poem telling me to pack for the next day because we were going to the place where wishes come true.. Disney !! He had booked a 5 day trip for us ! I thought it was to celebrate having no more ties with his ex etc since we had definitely wanted to wait for the engagement. On our first night there, during the Wishes fireworks, he was being super romantic (which is nothing abnormal), during the finale, he asked me to make all his wishes come true and since he didn’t want to be my boyfriend anymore, could he become my Fiance ? It truely was magical. I had NO IDEA what so ever. We didn’t even look at rings and he couldn’t have done a better job.
He worked mad, crazy hours and picked up extra work whenever he could, and saved enough to pay for the house down payment, my ring and the trip. So YEAH !!! to no debt.
