I’m trying to find a good DJ/Band but so far I’m stuck. I don’t need anything fancy but I do want someone good so that we get the people out and DANCING! I also want something reasonably priced and I have NO clue how much a good DJ costs. How did you find your DJ/Band??? Did you just do cold calls or online searches or did you ask a lot of differen people??? How much did you pay/expect to pay?

Our band was recommended to us by the coordinator at the venue, and since he used to be a professional musician we thought that recommendation had a lot of weight.
We decided to book them after hearing some samples from them, and are doing 7 pieces for a little over $5,000. They will also play during our ceremony and cocktail hour. I am so excited!
Otherwise I would recommend looking at ratings and possibly asking on local wedding boards. You should expect bands to be double or more the cost of DJs.

My DJ is my MOH’s SO. It’s their wedding gift to us (THANK GOD). There are alot of dj’s out there that do clubs etc that do sidejobs such as weddings, bday parties, etc. He says they normally only charge $200-400 depending. I don’t know what your budget is, but if it’s in that area, i’d definitely reach out to people you know and see if they know anybody or maybe an ad on craigslist.

@lauraminn: Yeaaaa 5k is just a wee bit out of my budget! lol but that sounds amazing!
@2strapscool: I did email the coordinator that will be working the venue for suggestions I just wanted to make sure what to expect pricewise.

Our DJ came with the venue, which is awesome (because it’s less work for us), and he was a couple hundred dollars cheaper than other DJs. We’ve heard great things about him and we’re actually meeting him in a few weeks at our tasting.

@Woodstock: I understand. It really varies by by area, and in Northern NJ things are just really expensive. I think DJs range from $1,000 to $2,000 plus where we are…

I won an hour of strings trio for our ceremony, so we ended up just going with the same company for cocktail hour/reception DJ. Honestly, though, they have been a huge hassle to deal with and at times I wish we had just bagged the trio for cocktail hour and gone with another company.
They are a really big company in our area though, and get really good reviews, so hopefully it turns out great day of.
Moral of my story….find your music provider because YOU like them, haha!
