Before Fiance and I got engaged I had already had a photographer in mind that I had found randomly on pinteret. Today I found out that we would have to pay an extra travel fee since he lives a bit farther away than I had thought. Though the fee is not huge, I am wanting to look around at my other options and see if he would still be the best deal.
However, our budget is on the lower end of the scale and it seems to be hard to find an experience photog in our price range through traditional channels like weddingwire, theknot, etc. I don’t even know where to start! I’d preferably like to get someone experienced (i.e. more than just a photography student) but maybe less known than the more popular photographers.
Bees, how did you find your photographer? Any tips?

I saw their flyer at a bridal salon, and got fixated on the photo on the cover 😛 It had a horse in it and that biased me from the very start, even though I went through dozens of websites before and after.
ETA:…just saw you were looking for tips…hmm I picked up a vendor book at a local wedding show and it listed dozens of photographers in the area, with websites and emails. We asked up front if they would charge an extra fee for travel since we had our wedding about 5-6 hrs away.

We went to school together and took our foundation courses at the same time.
Being an art major had its perks. 😉
My advice is to ask those around you and if they can personally recommend someone. You can look at someone’s portfolio all you like but you won’t know if working with that person is a breeze or a nightmare.

I actually found ours on Style Me Pretty. They had a wedding featured on there – the bride had submitted it (with their permission) and it was selected. It was only their third wedding, EVER. Fiance and I had already met with around six photographers and didn’t really LOVE any of them. We really liked ours, they were well within our budget (um, they had only done 5 weddings at that point! Their prices have increased DRASTICALLY since then, as has their skill – win/win for us!), and they were awesome. We really like them a lot – I’m so excited to get to spend our whole wedding day with them!

We got a preferred vendor list from our venue that listed florists, photographers, DJs, etc. that they’ve worked with before and had good experiences with, so we met with the different photographers on that list and chose the one we liked best!

I searched for photographers on Google, and a site popped up where you put in your wedding date/time/hours you would need the photog, and the photogs would e-mail you back with quotes if they were available and willing to do the job!
My photog was both the cheapest and by FAR the best!
I wish I remembered what the site was called!

@antique_acorn: I see you’re in central OH – depending on your budget I’d highly recommend Ashley Lynn Photography (http://www.ashleylynnphoto.com/)

@antique_acorn: I started by browsing style me pretty for photographers I liked in my city. Then I also googled “photojournalist[ic] wedding photographer” in my city when I realized I liked that style specifically. I probably looked at 30 or more photographers online and then contacted the ones I liked for rates and availability…. Met with 4 before making a final decision!

- Wedding: July 2012 - Baltimore Museum of Industry
I found several that I liked at a bridal expo- interviewed two of them. I also got recommendations on FB- interviewed two from there.
But, happy to report- I found our photographer via another Bee- your local boards can be a great source. I contacted messaged a Bee who also had gotten married at our venue with questions, she sent me a link to her slideshow, and I was sold!

Found ours at a bridal show, and she threw extra free things into our package just for attending the bridal show so that was awesome! 🙂

I found mine on the classified section of WeddingBee. THANK GOD because we had a low budget too and I was petrified we wouldn’t be able to find a photographer, let alone a quality one.
But ours was AMAZING and I LOVE our pictures.
I also used Google a lot and posted a lot on Facebook asking people to recommend budget vendors – and actually got a lot of hits.
And before I found our photographer, I contacted a different budget photographer to see if she had my date free but she didn’t. However, she was very nice and gave me 3 other names of people whose prices/styles were similar to hers.
I didn’t end up using any of them but it still gave me some options.
Just be patient and ask around – family, friends, the internet, co-workers, etc. Good luck!

A friend on Facebook had taken engagement pictures and I really liked them, so I googled the photographer and shot her an email. She had actually never done a wedding so the price was dirt cheep, but the pics were gorgeous.

I had done tons of research online and thought I knew about every photographer in the city and then I went to a bridal show and found the photographer we chose. He’s an older man so his website isn’t as impressive as others but the photos are amazing and he gave us a great price!
Tip: Keep looking! You never know who you’ll find.

I searched high and low, and found a few photographers within budget that I liked. Then, my dad mentioned someone he worked with who was a photographer now….and that photographer offered me an amazing friends and family discount!
