As for how we found our venue, my fiance was undergoing chemo for lymphoma, and a nurse saw that I was looking at wedding venues, and she had an awesome recommendation for us.

Have you checked DSMbride.com? They have a list of all types of Des Moines venues: http://dsmbride.com/wedding-venues/ceremony-reception/

If you want something less traditional, check out local museums or parks. If you want something rustic, you could see if anyone you know has a farm they’d be willing to let you use. Ask around at work (or church if you go), too, sometimes the most random people have the best suggestions.

I went to a bridal show simply because I was engaged and I was super exciting and wanted to do anything and everything wedding related and we ended up booking the venue it was at the very next day!

I figured out what we wanted (indoor, outdoor, both…). Then I got out and looked around. We are doing an outdoor tented vow renewal and reception. And a big bonus…it is completely free since it’s open to the public. YAY!!! See…

My Mom found the venue for us. She’d visited a few and then we went with her to visit the two she thought we’d like best. It turns out that we all liked the same venue best – and that was that.

I went to a wedding there! They were so on top of the game the whole night that I decided I wanted my wedding to be that stress free.

Our DJ actually suggested our venue to us! Ask any vendors that you have lined up, they’re all in the right business to know of good venue locations in the area.

Google! I think my top searches were “cheap wedding”, “budget wedding”, and “wedding package”, all in my city.

@anemone681:  I knew where I wanted it to be, or the general area, so I looked for wedding locations in that zipcode and by street and for places that hosted parties on google.

For example, “raleigh wedding location downtown”

Talk with other people.  Oregon has an Oregon Brides magazine with alot of different ideas in it, not sure if your state does.  Think outside the box, parks, museums, hotels, heck even some expensive condos might have places.
