I was doing a school report and presentation on Tiffany and co. Well I left up a big pic of the ring I liked and said ooooooo look at this! I never knew he would get it for me. Otherwise I would have left up a pic of a 10 carat ring. just kidding. I didntknow he was going to propose so soon. I thought maybe in a couple of years. But a month after my presentation I was engaged with the ring.

napasbride, Excuse me, MY man isn’t simple. I’m sorry if yours is though.
My Fi picked my ring out after hearing me comment that I liked a ring, not even with engagement in mind, about 2 months after we started dating. I was watching QVC or on of those shopping channels, actually, and oohing and aahing over the pretty shinys.

I did a google search sitting next to him, and then we bought the ring I liked best. Very fast and easy.

I told my Fiance what I wanted. We went to look and try some on in various styles, including the one I wanted, you never know if you’ll like something else more. Of course I ended up loving the original style. The lady ended up having to have the one I wanted sent to that store because they didn’t have any in the price range/diamond size we were looking at. When we went back to “look” at the ones that came in my Fiance bought my ring there on the spot, which surprised me. It did have to go back to NY for resizing and such though, so I still had to wait!
If you have your heart set on a specific style, mention it. Then ask if the two of you can go browsing and show him the rings that catch your eye. He may take the hint and pick out the style you like, or he may want to pick something out for you himself.
Edit: My Fiance and I had been discussing engagement and marriage prior to the ring. I wouldn’t really bring up the ring unless you have a solid feeling that that’s where your relationship is headed.

I told him what I wanted what were the “Must haves” in a ring and then he still didnt do very good so we just bought one together!

At the mall, we started stopping inside the stores “just to look.” We’d actually talk to the sales associate and I would try on different rings, and be like “I like this and this, but not this.” and then when the time was right, he went out and got it himself. Although he was SO NERVOUS I would hate it that he actually kept asking me what rings I liked. Apparently I picked out my ring without realizig it.

No need to really hint. I just sent him an email that said these are the styles I like, for future reference and left it at that. 🙂

My boyfriend asked me a lot about ring preferences. We went “window shopping” at an antique store before my friends wedding last fall. There was one ring there I really liked. That has since sold (as it was a long time ago) but there is a “family ring” that my boyfriend has now. He might look and see if there is anything he likes better, but I think that ring will probably be the one. I’m pretty picky with rings because I want them to be comfortable so I like a really thin band (I have kind of small fingers and more modern rings tend to have bands that are thicker). I know what it looks like already and everything but I am still in the dark about the proposal. I know whatever he decides will be great though!

When the topic of jewelry and other people’s engagement rings came up, I mentioned that I like white metal and the classic look of a round solitaire ering next to a pave wedding band. He got me a round solitaire in white gold and we recently picked out and ordered a pave band to go with it.

My boyfriend, around the beginning of this year, casually asked “Suppose, hypothetically, that someone was going to buy you a ring… What kind would you want” but I was so flustered that I kind of blew it! I said I liked vintage-y rings, and I like the square cut ones (he goes “Emerald cut, right?”, so he apparently had been doing some homework!), and the ones with the little stones around the big stone (very scientific, eh?), but I didn’t have any pictures or anything to show him! At least you have some just in case that moment comes…!
My friend and I also considered creating an email account like “[email protected]” or something and emailing our boyfriends ring pictures, but haven’t acted on that yet… We really should exchange photos of rings we each like, because I really wouldn’t be surprised if he asked her for ideas.

Hope I don’t get in trouble! =)

@ms.oregon.state: The oh-so-subtle approach. 😉
@NowDontLetsBeSilly: Yay boys that do their homework! When we first started talking rings, my guy made a spreadsheet of 26 different settings for me to evaluate, with space for me to tell him what I liked about each setting, didn’t like, and a top ten rating. Yeah. Ironically, the setting he had made wasn’t on that list…
