We dated for 7 years before getting engaged and we talked about marriage years before the proposal came. I knew it was coming because 1) our discussions of timelines made it pretty clear he would propose last summer so we could get married this summer and 2) we went ring shopping together.

I was completely surprised by the weekend he chose to propose though.

I didn’t know far in advance I knew like 5 minutes before because he told me I had to go out the patio door so I got a feeling something was up and he told me I had to wear a certain dress that he likes. When I went out the patio doors there was a bouquet of sunflowers and a lantern and I just stared at it for a minute thinking “holy shit this is it” I wasn’t expecting it at all before that moment, we have a daughter together and I was happy with where we were in our lives so it caught me off guard but it was perfect!

emitchell456:  my mom was coming to town this particular weekend. She’s about a 6-7 hour drive away. And it was Valentine’s Day weekend (so cliché, ugh lol). I knew he had the ring so I figured it would happen, and I was right.

So I snooped his e-mail ( I know I shouldnt have!) and saw conversations btw him and the diamond ppl.

I had an idea of when it would arrive. It arrived Saturday and he wanted to take me out to a resteraunt. We went, had some appitizers, drinks, and went home. I think it didnt happen then because there were SO many people. Went to bed as usual.

Sunday he had to do some work for a client in the morning, so I spent that time cleaning and stuff. He then said he wanted to take me out to lunch in the city (chicago) – we could walk around and it would be a nice day. Well when we got on the train, he wanted me to sit on a specific side of him (he had the ring in his pocket and probobly didnt want me to know or smush it.

We walked around, took a river taxi, got lunch, walked around by Buckingham Fountain, got some ice cream and he proposed at Buckingham Fountain 🙂

We had discussed it a month before, and the holidays were coming up.  I put two and two together.  Plus he sucks at keeping secrets haha.

I had no idea.   I actually thought he had fallen over when I turned around to find him down on one knee (at our advanced ages this is something to be concerned about lol).

It explained why he’d been acting so weird all day though.

We had narrowed down the ring choices together. But I definitely wasn’t expecting him to have it with him day he proposed!

My fiancé plans nothing. So when he suddenly says he’s booked a trip for us and it’s a surprise and NOT my birthday, I guessed pretty quickly. I even knew where we were going through deductive reasoning- i didn’t tell him that though 😉

I couldn’t have asked for anything better though. It may have been a seven hour drive, it was windy, rainy and I looked a mess but when he got down on one knee in front of a lake my heart melted. Even if I saw it coming, I was still speechless.

We had discussed it prior, and I was sitting next to him when he ordered the ring. I spoiled the proposal a bit with invasive questions (what/when), so he ended up asking a little later than he had planned.

We’d been dating for six months and we were going on our second long weekend ski trip together. As we were leaving I heard him tell my sister that he had brought some champagne because it was going to be a special occasion. But he said it loud enough for me to hear and smiled at me. He wasn’t exactly covert about the operation lol.

We had talked about getting married, but my index of suspicion went up because he planned a weekend trip for us and was not telling me many details about it. Then when we were there, he was adamant about taking his backpack (with ring inside) with us everywhere. Lastly, he had packed some of his super rare beer for our trip, and I knew that he only saves that stuff for special occassions. I just went with it and told myself it would be ok if I was wrong with my prediction, but I was right!

We had decided that marriage was definitely in our future about five months before we were *officially* engaged and he told me he would propose “the right way” before the end of the year. The day before our first anniversary (yeah, we moved pretty fast) we stopped at his mother’s house to visit before going to a nearby restaurant and after returning to the table from the bathroom I (prematurely) found HIS engagement ring in my purse. On our way to eat I questioned if he had something planned and he vehemently denied everything. I believed him for TWO SECONDS but ultimately I knew what was coming that night.

He doesn’t know the definition of “surprise” lol Took me to Sears to get my ring finger measured. Then I decided to want to have a say in picking my ring 🙂 So, not engaged yet, but the conversation’s been had, it’s happening before June and I get to be sure I’ll love the ring lol
