Question for all you bees! How did you know what you wanted to do in life, career-wise? Did you always have a calling for a certain profession, or did you pick something and hope you liked it?
I’m asking because I have no idea. I’ve switched ideas in my mind so many times. I even started university last year for an English BA (to go into teaching) but quickly realized it wasn’t what I wanted to do. I’m going back and forth between ECE or some sort of cosmetic job (hairstyling, spa, esthetician), along with a whole bunch of other things. I’m thinking about nursing actually… It’s such a great career field, tons of job opportunities and stability, plus it’s a field I’m actually interested in.
Anyways, how did you pick your career field?
(Another somewhat negative post… need to get positive again asap!)

I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up…
I went to school for International Business & Economics, went to grad school for Justice/Legal studies…
I am now a Business Analyst in Health Care Management… moving into Project Management in a couple of weeks… nothing to do with international anything, and nothing to do with Justice Studies, which I love.
I even thought about saying “fughedaboudit” and becoming a personal trainer about a year ago… except I’m not even in shape!
And to think, I wanted to be an astronaut or a Supreme Court Justice when I was 15…

I love love love to talk. So it was either lawyer or writer. Annabelle made that decision for me by being born before law school started 🙂

i decided in high school that i loved fashion and wanted to be a designer, so i went to school for it (at DAAP, the design college at the University of Cicinnati, one of the top programs in the country) and now I’m a designer at A&F 🙂 i have always been into art and design so I knew my career would be in a design related field. it’s funny you say you have no idea what you want to do but you’re considering cosmetology or nursing… aren’t those the go-to fields for girls who don’t know what they want to do??

I always wanted to be a Vet, but I know there is no way I could ever afford vet school so I got an AA in Animal Science and Sociology and I’m going to school to get my bachelors in Sociology with the hopes of being able to expand some of the “pets in hospitals/schools” programs.

@floridabride12: I work with autistic children and you would be amazed how much having a dog visit here changes things. I think you’re plan sounds fab.

I still don’t know! I have a BA in Spanish and English that I have yet to use, but have dabbled in retail management, wedding planning/events and now do administrative stuff (which has by far the best schedule and benefits!). I think of it as kind of a journey, I figure out more and more along the way and I’ll change jobs/careers if I feel like it’s what’s best at the time.

I still don’t know what I want to be. I took a job that hired me 🙂

I have no idea what I want to do. I graduated with a BA in history and now I’m an admin at a non-profit until I figure it out. 😛 I really wanted to get into the museum field, but with the economy being so crappy almost all museums have had a hiring freeze for like 2 years.

Well I have a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, but I’m graduating from law school in May… and I’ve decided that I want to practice law as little as possible. I actually would love to teach law school, but it’s soooo hard to get a law prof job. I do have the advantage of being a woman studying intellectual property who wants to stay in the south and has a judicial clerkship, but that won’t get me too far among the competition. If I can’t be a prof, then I’ll probably go back to school sometime in my 30s to figure out something else. Oh, and I’m just starting my own business selling homemade dog treats. Maybe that will take off, and I can spend my time baking. ha. Yeah, so basically I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up.

I’m 30 and I have no idea what I want to do when I grow up. I’m a successful executive in a large company, but that was never my plan it just happened. I worked my way up the ladder. I would love to be doing something more creative.

I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up (hehe). I graduated college having gone through 5 or 6 majors and planned on going into the Peace Corps or go to Mortuary School. I lucked into a government job and now I’m just trying to do my best at it. I’ve found that unless you know EXACTLY what you want to do, don’t sweat it, it will come. I may not have seen myself in this job 2 years ago but whatever opportunities I’m given, I explore and just try to be the best I can be at it.

Ive been in my field for about 5 years now, and hold my B.S. in the field, but I still dont know. I don’t have a calling or passion for it…it just sort of happened. I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it either. I feel lucky to have a decent job, especially in this economy.
I always talk about switching careers but I have no idea what I want to do. I wish I was one of those people that just grew up loving a certain field and went for it.
