We named our pup Frankie after Frank Sinatra. Sinatra was one of the first things that the boy and I discovered we had in common (kind of strange to find two 16 year olds that love Sinatra)…if only Frankie had blue eyes

I named my dog  Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili (aka Joseph Stalin–‘Joey’ for short); I am a huge history nerd, and was really really into Bolshevik/Communist history at the time (highschool). i still enjoy it, though their are definite haters out there.

As for our cat, our [then] 3 yr old named him “Merlin.”  I don’t know if it was because he had watched Disney’s Sword and the Stone 3 weeks prior, or due to the fact that when our tuxie miaow’s he says “Meeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrle”; either way I thought it was a pretty rockin’ name for a 3yro to pick out, esp. since I was expecting something like fluffy, or whiskers. Tongue out

My old man kitty who passed away this past winter was named Maynard. He was the awkward runt of the litter and deserved a dorky awkward name. It suited him perfectly.

Now that my SO and I have moved into together, we have two kitties! My SO already Tux (aptly named black and white tuxedo kitty), and then we adopted Timber. We named her Timber because (1) we are huge Portland Timbers fans; (2) Portland/Oregon is known for its timber industry, and (3) we liked that its androgynous!

(sad! no pictures of tux or timber! they’re all on my SO’s computer..)

Our puppy is named Ziggy – the trail that DH proposed on is called the Zigzags so that’s where it came from…

We also seriously considered Roscoe after one of our favorite people we met on our honeymoon but it just didn’t match the pup…I’ve given it to him as a middle name  Laughing

Ginny was named Virginia when we got her from a shelter, but that name didn’t match her personality at all!  So we shortened it to Ginny and she came running when we called to her with her new name.

I looked on baby name websites and the only name out of the 500 I picked out that FH liked was Stella! Here she is!

We named our girl Callie because I absolutely loved reading Middlesex (still do!)  We considered taking her brother too, and we would’ve named him Hobbes, giving us Callie and Hobbes!  Here she is, after she climbed all the way to the top of SO’s upright bass!

The breeder and her family always named the puppies from each litter.  Just for fun.  So when we got Oliver (buff) that was already his name and it just stuck.  We tried to think of a name we liked better for a couple of days, but ended up keeping Oliver.

With Daphne (chocolate) we had a tough time landing on a name.  We knew we wanted another name that was also a ‘human’ name.  We looked at top 100 names for different centuries and ended up with Daphne.

I have two cats.

Lola was named because we love Iron Chef (and also local chef) Michael Symon. Our favorite restaurant of his is called Lola. So we named her Lola!

Stitch came home to us from a rescue group last August. He had already been named Stitch Robert by his previous owners. I wasn’t sure I liked the name, but once we had him it just seemed to suit him the best so we never changed it. We call him Stitch most of the time, but I also called him Stitch Robert which cracks me up:)

Only bad thing is that people who meet the cats the first time think their names are Lilo and Stitch haha

I like “people” names for pets so I initially just started throwing some names out that I liked… but whenever Stew is nervous or bored he holds his ears out to the side rather than up and he was nervous basically the whole first week I had him. With his ears like that he kind of looked like he had a football shaped head… and one of my favorite shows is family guy so…… Stewie it was! 🙂

fun fact- my favorite character on family guy is actually the dog whose name is Brian. plus, I think Brian is a hilarious name for a dog because it isn’t something you hear often. but– my fi’s name is brian (please don’t stalk us lol) so that was out. If i had gotten him before I met my fi i’m like 90% sure i would’ve named him brian, which would’ve been kind of funny and confusing!

I named kittay after the Harry Potter character Ollivander. 🙂 We call him Oliver most of the time. Also the “army of elves” part is true about him also. He’s WILD!! I had a friend tell me he’s going to be the first ever victim of feline suicide with a name like that.

Well we don’t have a dog right now. but my dog growning up  came to us with the name of Pepper. We decided it was better to keep him with that name than trying to change it. Later though i decided to give a middle name… Corneilous Fudge! That’s right from the Harry Potter books. I remember I would always call him by his full fame. Pepper Corneilous Fudge! 🙂

We adopted Libby from an animal shelter where they give cats temporary names based on the current theme when they come in. For instance, one week the theme is cars, and the cats are named Toyota, Ford, Sentra, etc. When Libby came in, the theme was countries and her temporary name was “Liberia,” so we got Libby from that.
