Ours was pretty private.  The party was inside watching but not in the photos. 🙂

Oh the first look. I am all for it! I read an article before my wedding and it reassured me that having a first look was the right choice for me. For starters, it calmed my nerves. Secondly, the first look was the most intimate moment of our wedding. It was OUR time together (before all the chaos insued). So, with that said, DO IT! You won’t have any regrets. Tears were shed. 😀

@excitedtobeMRSF:  I am totally on the fence about others seeing– while I see why it would be cool I also see why it should be private. With that said I can almost bet our moment will be private 🙂

I’ve never seen the bridal party there for the first look.

I googled it, and this was the only decent photo I could find.

Unless you’re doing it somewhere cool like this, I’d recommend NOT having the bridal party there. They’re just going to get in the way if you ask me (unless you want out of focus people moving around in the back of your intimate photos).

Are you sure the photographer meant for them to actually be there for the first look? Sometimes I’ll shoot the bridal party AFTER the first look, if between the ceremony and reception is tight.

The 1st look was the most memorable and special part of our whole day because it wasn’t celebrated with 100 people. Unfortunately, like you, my Mother-In-Law was adamant she be there so I caved and allowed our wedding party and parents to watch.  It didn’t really take away from the moment but I still wish it was just the 2 of us and the photographer. It was very emotional and I was just very aware of “spectators”.  But really, it still was an amazing moment – sometimes you gotta pick your battles.

As a photographer it’s not my job to influence whether or not you do a first look or don’t do a first look. My job is to educate on what it is, how it works, and what the advantages and disadvantages are to either scenario as they impact the photos. If someone wants to do a first look it’s not for me to influence who should be watching in the background, that’s your decisions based on your own comfort level.

I choose to do a first look for convenience as well as getting bridal party photos out of the way before the ceremony instead of after. However having the bridal party IN the first look is not my idea of a good first look photo. No offence meant to anyone that did it. For me, it will be just me and FH. My bridal party will watch from outside the shot because they’ll be standing around waiting for us to start the bridal party photos directly after the first look portion is done.
