I can only make a guess on “average” based on our friends and family’s house cost for a first home and we spent more than they did so I chose above average.

If you are referring to the average in comparison to friends whom also bought a house, ours was slightly more then the average.

If you are referring to the average cost of homes in our neighborhood, it is right at average with the prices of the other houses that were for sale.

@AB Bride:  I guess we just paid attention to what we could afford, not the average cost of the housing market.

@AB Bride:  I haven’t bought a house yet but how do you find out information on the market? I’ve seen comparisons to the houses in the neighborhood on some websites but definitely nothing like an average (I’m sure a real estate agent could answer this question but I figured I’d ask anyway lol)

Ours was a little bit lower than the average… everything else about it is pretty average (type of upgrades, garage, size, etc.) but we got it from a builder as a former spec home so we got a decent deal on it.

Well, the average LIST price in the county we’re purchasing our home is $608,711.  The median SALE price in the county is $314,000.  Either way, we’re below average on the house we’re currently in the process of buying.

ETA:  I got these figures from Trulia.

The average sold price for the city we live in is $252,000.  Our first home we spent way below that but only because it was sold to us by a family member but we ended up selling it for just under the average sold price.  The new house we are buying is above that average cost by $100,000.
