And how did the rest of the pregnancy go?
I am half a centimeter dilated (as oppose to last week when I was a “fingertip” diliated which they considered “not at all”), and my cervix is “nice and soft” whatever that means! I know there is no real way to tell when she will be coming, but I really wish there was!

At 37+3 I was 1 cm and 50% effaced. We’ll see how the rest goes…
My doula said she was more concerned w/ effacement than dilation as an indicator for how close to labor you are.
Did they tell you if your baby has dropped?

I was fingertip from 36- 41 (ahhhh!) weeks. and then when my water broke still nothing for 5 hours. I was induced with pitocen. I was miserable I tell ya.

I don’t know! I’m kind of happy that I don’t know, even though I keep on having dreams about being 4 cm dilated at my next appt. I’m not sure I will have a check until labor.

At my 36 week I was barely a fingertip dilated and “about 60%” effaced. I’m 38.5 weeks now, and I haven’t been checked since. I’m so hoping they’ll be like “O wow! you’re 4 cm!” the next time they check me, but I will probably not get checked again until labor starts.
Does anyone else get sharp pains in their cervix like when the baby’s head pushes down on it? I’m hoping this is speeding up the effacement/dilation!

@JessyMess: YES! I had this all last night, it was hard to sleep, but I said, “Good job, baby! Soften up mommy’s cervix!”

I was barely 1 cm at 36 weeks & today at my 38 week check up we didn’t do a cervical check which like @mrsjazz I’m happy about.
You seriously can walk around dilated & effaced for WEEKS and it mean nothing…. and so many times moms get discouraged b/c they’re not “progressing”.
I probably won’t be checked again until I go into labor… and then even I don’t want checks throughout labor. I’m SURE I’ll know when it’s time to push! lol

With Dirty Delete, I was 1 cm at 37 weeks; 1.5 cms at 38 weeks; and I had her the day of my 39 week appointment. With #2, I was 1 cm at 36 and 37 weeks (apparently you never completely close up again after the first baby) and 3 cms at 38 weeks.
Dilation isn’t a very good indicator of when the baby will be born, unfortunately. For this reason and others (like the small risk of infection, discomfort, etc…) a lot of people decline them. Even though it doesn’t mean much, I like being checked. 🙂 It makes me feel like I’m making progress, even though rationally I know I could be stuck like this for a few more weeks, lol.

From weeks 31-36 I was 1cm dilated (on bedrest b/c of it = yuck!), hovered around 2-3cm from 36-38wks, and had my son at 38wks. Not sure about the other stats b/c I had DS pretty quickly when labor finally kicked into gear.

are you a new mom? or have you had kids before? if you have had a child before, that degree of dilation (if not more) is normal (almost to be expected) at 37 weeks. The terms nice and soft refer to the fact that your cervix is made of cartilage (like your nose.. it is firm to touch). as your body prepares for labor, it secretes enzymes that break this down. moms who have already had kids will typically experience this change earlier but this will not necessarily indicate an earlier delivery. no one can tell you when labor will kickstart, but your body is certainly doing what it is supposed to.

i had my 36 week appointment today but thankfully they didnt check my cervix. she just did the group b strep swab and that was it! I think I prefer not knowing how dilated I am this early..

My last pregnancy I was 2cm dilated, and thought “I’m going to go into labor any day now!”
Nope, 10 days late.

I was completely closed at my 37 week appt and dilated to a 1 at my 38 week appt a few days ago.

@KatyElle: this depresses me -coming from a person who does not enjoy pregnancy and wishes it was half its length

I am not dilated at all (32 weeks)
but here is my mother’s story when I was born (and I’m her first born):
At 40 weeks she was still not dilated.
At 40 weeks 1 day she was 1cm dilated. She was 1cm for 36 hours. Then she went to the hospital and asked them to check and the nurse was annoyed like “you’re still going to be 1 maybe 2cm” and my mom was 6cm. I was born 2 hours later.
Some women are 1cm for weeks and weeks and weeks, and others go very quickly once it starts. No worries, you’ll get there and baby will come when baby is good and ready. 😀
