I’ve gotten to the point where I am able to say what I want– that was not always an easy thing to do– and I have flat out told him that my goal is to be engaged by my 26th birthday. After being together for 5 years, living together for 4 of those, AND already owning a home together, that’s the next step.

I find that I’m still somewhat shy in terms of engagement but VERY much direct in terms of marriage talk and how it relates to the future.

@Shirinjoon: I’m the same way. Sometimes I say it if I’m feeling bold enough, lol. But otherwise I’ll just say ‘the next step’ or ‘the next level’ or ‘making plans for certain things’. It’s bad, I know… We should speak our minds and not beat around the bush, but it’s hard to do when you get all shy Embarassed

I always use the words engaged, married, etc. I’ve never used “the next step”. To me, that sounds like, in every relationship that gets this far should automatically go to marriage, not just THIS particular relationship.

It’s kind of a weird thing for me and my SO to talk about. I say things like, “When we’re married”, and “At the wedding….” but I rarely say engaged. Even when talking about ring shopping, he won’t say engagement ring. He says, “shiny thing”…which is adorable.
