Hello bees,
I’ve got my Wedding dress and it was strapless. I will be wearing it strapless for the reception but for the church ceremony i’ve got to attach some lace straps. So i told the tailor to add the straps. the problem is she sewed them to the dres 🙁 .After that when i told her to make them detachable she wasnt willing to do it and said it would ruin the dress and the straps wont take the weight of the dres??!!? She is a relative so i couldn’t argue with her.
Anyway, i got the dress home and i did it myself. I got velcro tape to attach the detachable strps to the dress for the ceremony and theni would remove the lace straps for the reception. I’ve tried the dress on with and without the straps and it seems to be perfect. But im afraid the tailor might be right. The velcro tape looks like it will give way and detach during the ceremony. Are there any other ways besides using velcro? like hooks or press buttons? Do you girls know of any? and how do i do it? Helppp..

@futuremrscap: Every time I’ve seen dresses with detachable straps there were buttons on the inside and button holes on the straps, if that helps.

I would consider a bolero. Some of them look just like straps

Here’s what you do. You can keep the velcro on but at the bottom of the strap (in both front and back), attach a couple of hooks (like hook and eye type hooks from the fabric store). Then sew the corresponding eyes to the inside of the dress just a little lower than where they would be level with the hooks (to create tension). When you hook them together, should the velcro start pulling out, the hook and eyes will create tension from the front and back, preventing the straps from pulling out.

@futuremrscap: I’d use clear plastic snaps! And PLENTY of them… Though if the dress was designed to be strapless, it should hold itself in place and not require too much support from the straps!

Thank you so much girls for the ideas.
@idoalterations: your hook idea is great. i will try that asap.
@lovelyhulagirl33: i thought about buttons as soon as i wanted lace straps but i couldnt find white or plastic ones in the store. all i got was some steel/silver ones. Thank you for the idea though.Next time im going with buttons for any strapless dress if i find the right colour.
@mgbser: I already have a tulle bolero. but the church seems to have some rules about transparent clothing(dont ask me why 😛 ) so im going with straps(got it along with the dress so it has the matching lace on it already). I might add the bolero…thats a thought in progress..still have 2 months to think abt it.
@BrandNewBride: I dont think we get plastic snaps in India. will find out..

My dress has a detachable one shoulder strap, and it goes in with one of those plastic snaps. I can also thread it through a loop on the dress just above the snap to hold it closer to the dress bodice versus my skin, so it doesn’t look so detachable and like it’s supposed to be there. If that makes sense!

Don’t worry, the plastic snaps are crap anyway. They come undone way too easily. The hooks will work great.
