I have found myself with this unbelieveable passion to be more involved in the LGBTQ community. I am a hetero female in a hetero relationship but want to express my love, understanding and tolerance of the LGBTQ community. I want to fight for the rights of all people and want to know what I can do to become more of a staple in this fight. I know I can become involved in my local LBTQ community but was wondering if there is anything else I can do? Expressing my feelings and beliefs on such places as FB and Twitter seem… well… unproductive, I just wish I knew more that I could do to show my support for the LGBTQ community….. I am an Ally and want to shout it from the rooftops!!!!

I think it’s great that you want to help support the community! The best thing you can do to help is donate your time! There are so many organizations that are always in need of volunteers. Here are a few links to organizations that may have chapters near you.
HRC is a fantastic organization that advocates for equal rights. They are a pretty big organization and are all over the US.
PFLAG is an organization that is for parents and friends and family of LGBT.
GLSEN helps to promote positive change in schools.
You can also check to see if your hometown has an LGBT community center. They are also always in seach of people who are available to volunteer even if it’s just a few hours every month.

I am also a hetero woman and put a lot of thought into how to support my gay friends who are not allowed to marry while I plan my wedding. I’ve made a decision to only book vendors who work with gay couples as well. We live right in the buckle of the Bible Belt, so it can be harder than you think. Not to mention, it’s a bit odd to ask the question when we’re a straight couple.
I have been amazed at the vendors who won’t even return my e-mails when I ask if they work with same-sex couples as compared to those that can’t hit reply fast enough when I don’t ask.
