Every wedding I’ve ever been to the best man takes off the garter and throws it. My fiance said the best man takes it off and keeps it because he said that’s what he did in his friends wedding. Now it seems like the grooms are taking it off and throwing it??? Is there a certain way for it to be done or is it just what you prefer to do?? How are you doing it??

@LTeter27: The first time I saw this done (which would be some time in the late fifties or early sixties) the bride simply handed the garter to the groom when they came back into the reception hall after changing into their going-away clothes. And the groom then threw it to the assembled bachelors present.
It wasn’t until the eighties that I ever attended a wedding where the groom removed the garter publicly in the middle of the dance floor. Everyone laughed as though it were a big joke, and the DJ played some ruanchy stripper music to emphasize the moment. I thought it spoke volumes for how much times have changed that the “blushing bride” did not, in fact, even blush.
Now I hear that the groom routinely puts his head under his bride’s dress and pulls the garter off with his teeth. Not in MY family, thank goodness! The last three or four family weddings I can recall either didn’t do a garter toss, or … the bride simiply handed the garter to the groom when she came back into the reception hall after changing into her going-away clothes.
I have never seen the best man publicly removing his best friend’s bride’s symbolic undergarment, but nothing would surprise me.
