Growing up my entire family (both parents, myself & my sister) met for dinner every single night at 6:30 on the dot, at the dinner table with no TV & I enjoyed it. We were not allowed to eat on the couches, evvaaaa’.
Now Darling Husband and I eat every night at 6:30 on the dot, buuut on the couch watching movies :/ hahah. I fill the dining table with all my stuff, so when my parents come over I clean it off and we eat there.
Come to think of it, my table is spotless now and we still don’t eat on it lol BUT when we have a LO we’ll eat at the table every.night because thats how I grew up and I enjoyed talking to my parents at dinner. 🙂

Well I grew up in the same kind of house as OP, and plan to do the “eat at the table, no TV” situation when I have children… but until then, Fiance and I sit at the couch and eat in front of a show together.
I should mention that Fiance and work in the same office with an intraoffice IM program, so we aren’t really concerned with talking about our days… we talk/see eachother all day!

Growing up we never had TV during dinner, until my parents divorced and my mom got a full time job. Then we’d all kind of eat dinner separately at different times and it didn’t matter where we ate it.
Sometimes we eat dinner infront of the TV, but mostly we eat at the dinner table together. My Darling Husband and I work together so it’s not like dinner time is when we catch up on each other’s day… we’re together all day lol!

We NEVER watch tv during dinner, even if we have Papa Johns. Dinner is pretty sacred to us. We sit at the table and eat together. The tv gets turned off. I hate the idea of television intruding on our marriage and the time we should be spending together. Meal time is supposed to be a social time, and the tv is mindless, non-quality time. We also don’t have a tv in the bedroom.

We watch TV (The Chew) and eat dinner, our coffee table is pretty much our dining table.

@Mrs. Penguin: Unfortunately can’t see the pics right now
As an Encore Bride at 50+ years old, I can tell you that your “guess” is probably right… as parents you probably will lean more towards a tabletop setting, vs on the couch etc.
When I was married the first time (23 years old) my Ex and I used to eat in front of the Tv most nights when we were newlyweds, up until the babies came (3 years on)… then we all ate as a family at the Kitchen Table evenings (and Sunday Dinner & Holiday / Special Meals in the Dining Room). That went on until we seperated (around the time the kids went off to college)
As a single person living alone, I was back eating in front of the Tv
When I met Mr TTR, we too gravitated to the Family Room in front of the Tv… we actually find it fun to eat and watch “the tube”. But it isn’t where we eat everyday… we also spend a fair bit of time going out to eat together (pub nites / and one date night each week) so we have plenty of time to chit-chat & catch up (mind you we live together, are semi-retired and so we are around each other pretty much 24/7-365 anyhow)

we eat dinner together almost everynight…i dont mind the tv being on…mostly because we both love sports and there is usually always a game on…however i have a strict NO CELL PHONES! during dinner…as a society we seem to be attached to our phones so its our time to catch up and chat about the game or whatever is on our minds 😉

We don’t sit at the table unless we have company which has only been a handful of times in the last 5 years that we’ve been in our condo. We sit on the couch and watch TV while eating. We each have our own laptop desks that double as our table (classy, I know). Growing up we rotated between eating in the dining room or the living room in front of the TV. Back then it kind of depended on what we were eating (like pizza night was always in front of the TV). When we have kids, we’ll probably do the same (rotate depending on the meal).

We sit on the couch in front of the tv, either a netflix or a pvr’d show, we actually have one of those lift up coffee tables. We live in an apartment so our actual table is always covered in laundry and whatnot. Growing up we always had the news on at dinner, so having the tv on doesn’t bother me.

Dinner is usually at the coffee table with the tv on. Unless I’m cooking something nicer. In that case, it’s in the dining room with no tv.

In front of the tv, on the couch. Our kitchen table is full of appliances, BBQ accessories, etc. I’m also by myself most of the week, eating without the computer or tv just feels weird. I hope that once we move we’ll eat at the table at least some of the time!
My parents thought that they would almost always eat at the kitchen table as long as they were in their current home, but now that it’s just the 2 of them, they’ve been eating in front of the tv more and more!

Interesting…. Growing up, it was fend for yourself in my house. Both myparents worked full time and often late so it was anoccasion when we woulf eat together. I was surprised when I met dh that his family ate together every night. Even as adults, if dh or his brothers were there, they were expected for dinner. The tv was often on jepordy.
When we moved in together, I wasn’t too surprised that dh wanted to eat at the table every night, regardless of what time I get home from work. We very rarely will turnthe tv off but we don’t exactly pay attention to it, it’s not at a good angle. On rare occasions we will eat takeout on the couch.

Now that you mention it, I think we used to eat dinner while watching tv before we had our son. Now we mostly eat at the dinner table, it’s a rule in our home, it’s where we get together to interact about our days. Unless of course it’s lazy pizza take out, then we do eat while watching tv, it’s still fun..sometimes!

Most weeks I eat with FH twice a week – Tuesday, a later dinne,r and Sunday brunch. We have VERY different work schedules and I like it that way! When we do eat together, it is usually at the dining table or on the back deck at the picnic table.

We always eat at the table. Usually the news is on in the background, but it’s mostly talk time. The only time we eat on the couch infront of the TV is when we’re eating pizza.
