I actually took this into consideration when I was looking for jobs. I made sure my job was relatively near a gym because I will look for ANY excuse not to go (too cold, too far, I’ll be home too late, etc.) I definitely hate lugging stuff around on public transportation. Some gyms have locker rentals though, that could be an option.
As for motivation, I download great new workout music but make myself wait until I’m at the gym to listen to it 🙂

I agree with a lot of PPs in going as soon as you get home and drinking a cup of coffee. I get home from work, throw on my workout clothes, drink a cup of coffee and then head to the gym. I also find that taking classes at the gym helps as they all start at specific times (like spin class at 5:30) so I can’t just dilly-dally at home all evening before deciding to head to the gym.

I never go home before the gym! I commute to work, so I carry my gym stuff with me and head straight to the gym after work! The moment I reach my warm and cozy home, there is no going back outside!

I actually have the gym at home. I also know that I can eat a heck of a lot more if I work out, so that in and of itself is motivation.
“Hmm… I can sit on the couch and let my ass get sore before eating a small dinner… or I can go upstairs, lift some weights and then come down and eat a huge dinner and some Ben and Jerry’s… Lifting it is!”

I actually just work out at home…
My shifts rotate each week. One week we work ten hour shifts (and have Fridays off), and the next we have 8 hour shifts. So one week I’ll be off at 6, the next it’ll be 4:30.
It really puts me at a disadvantage for any classes I could take at the rec center here.
But I am currently doing Insanity at home. I’m in my 2nd week of the 2nd month. And I love it. 🙂

I drink an e-boost and just go straight there so I can’t become a lump! Plus, habit breeds consistency. Once you get into a routine, it’s a lot easier.

@chicagoworkinggirl: you have to pack a gym bag to go directly after work- because I am the EXACT same way as you, and have no willpower to stay out of my bed when I get home.
I also eat a small pick-me-up snack and some green tea to give me some extra energy to feel more motivated to exercise 🙂

My gym is through my work. The gym is on my way home and I only pay $30 a month for a family membership. I do take a class that I pay extra for through them but its only $6 a week. The extra class I pay for is actually what gets my butt there. But when my son takes Tae Kwon Do in the evenings I will workout in the gym doing the treadmill, and weights for that hour. I have no excuses when I have to take him to the gym 3 days a week anyway.

i think as it gets colder my SO and i will start going right after work, that way traffic is lighter ( it gets SOOOO slow during rush hour in the winter) AND that way we don’t get lazy and just end up not going if it’s really cold….our gym is right next to our workplaces ( we work across the street from each other) and we have underground heated parking, so it’s a great time to go, the car stays warm, we stay warm, then we don’t have to go out again that night if the weather sucks! darn Canada!
right now we go home first ( gotta let the dogs out!), we eat, sometimes we even take an hour nap, then we usually go to the gym around 8 pm. Out motivation is that our gym is open 24 hrs, so if we put it off, there is NO EXCUSE because the gym is still open! lol and i don’t like the idea of going at 10pm, so that mentality forces me to get there at a reasonable hour, and we go five days a week!

OP, i think you and i are the same person!
to people who successfully do this, how/when do you eat dinner? i really pride myself on homecooked meals and this is my biggest excuse for why i can’t go to the gym

I’m barely on my 4th week of working out and it has definitely been a mental challenge more than anything. After an 11 hour day I don’t wanna do anything else besides go home and sleep! Lol. My motivation has been looking at the fitness section on Pinterest. I’ll look at it an hour before I go home from work and get all sorts of ideas and motivation. I have a small gym where I live so ill use that or DVD’s. One thing I read was to treat your workouts like you’re going to an important business meeting. Make a time and be there no matter what. Sometimes I’m too hungry and don’t like to work out on an empty stomach so I’ll have a small dinner, relax then make sure I do something aerobic lol. Set small goals for yourself too, I’m a newbie so 3x a week is realistic for me. Plus I know I won’t see results right away so I have to keep at it.
If its something you want you won’t make excuses. I know it’s easier said than done lol.
