I’m an academic and get criticized all the time! A good 90-95% of what my advisor tells me is criticism. I’m used to it.
I gave my dissertation to a committee member (not my advisor) who has to approve it before I can defend (and graduate!). He told me parts of my dissertation were completely “unreadable” and “hostile to the reader” and he had to “suffer through it.”
Fortunately he said this over email because I burst into tears. This dissertation is something I had worked on for months and had gone through several drafts already with my advisor. I was able to talk to some good friends and Darling Husband and feel better.
I’m not asking for advice on how to deal with this guy in particular. I’m wondering how to deal with people like him in the future.
The thing is, I know I’m going to get this kind of treatment from academics in the future. Academics typically have poor social skills, especially in cognitive science for some reason. DH told me just to let it roll off my back, but how?
So what do you do when someone says rude or just plain mean things to you? Especially when it’s someone you have to be around in the future?
