Hubby and I are in our 30’s and both uncertain if we want to have kids. We do, but we don’t know if we really, really do. So anyway, how are we going to know when we’re ready? Is it like marriage? You just know…. 🙂

I think you either know you want to or you know you don’t. But I don’t think there is a certain “time” that you will know. If you try to plan it out, you will always have pros and cons and may never decide!

Check out this recent thread:
To have or not have…A BABY.
There were a lot of good viewpoints

I don’t think you ever really “know” with a baby! I was 38 when we got married and I knew that we would have a limited window to have a child if we were going to do so. I finally decided that I wanted to have the chance at every experience that life had to offer us… That meant carrying and raising a child.
We figured it would take us about a year (so I’d have time to mentally prepare), though it didn’t actually happen like that for us. I guess that’s just the beginning of the unpredictability of children.
I didn’t feel like our choice was about future regrets or anything like that, but rather about life experiences. I’m excited to see what the future holds for me and my partner, and what “family” will mean to us.
I don’t know if this will help, but I can very accurately say that I never had that strong biological urge to have children. It was more intellectual than that for me!
I wanted to add this thread to the mix:
Afraid we wont ever be ready for kids?

My mom always said, if you wait until you are 100% ready to have a baby, you will never have a baby. She said eventually you just have to, and go from there.

@ DrGirl Thanks so much for your post about making the intellectual decision and congratulation so much on your new baby on the way. What an experience!! I’ll check out the link now.
@ Lindsay…you know what they say, moms are always right. 🙂

For us, it will be when we are more financially stable, and when I’m ready to give up my current lifestyle ;o) We still enjoy going out and such (esp. to the bar for football Sunday) and I would miss that if I was pregnant/had a kid. I’m also training for two half-marathons and hopefully the 2011 NYC Marathon and you can’t do that when you’re pregnant ;o)
So once we’re ready to switch to a more toned-down lifestyle, and have enough money to support a family, we’ll do it.

Wow!! I just dug up this thread I previously posted wondering if I’m ready or not to have kids. This is hilarious because I wrote this two weeks ago which is just about when I ovulated and conceived (dec 23 or so)….I guess I just knew, in a way!!
Thanks Rosy and Mrs. Dr. Girl for your recommendations to read those links. It reassured me! *just found out 2 days ago that I’m pregnant and I realized we are ready, excited and looking forward!!
