I was reading a post about how to pronouce baby names, which got me thinking:
How do you pronounce bag?
I moved to Wisconsin from St. Louis a couple of years ago. I think accents are fascinating so of course I hear the “long o” that is so northern, but the one I notice more is when people say “bag” or “flag”.
How do you say it?

Funny, I’m from Wisconsin 🙂 I used to say it with the long A, but once I traveled and met people from other places and realized it was mainly just a WI thing… I tried to start saying it with the short A. Now I pronounce it like a hybrid in between the short and long A, lol.

My brain can’t process the difference between a long a and a short a at the moment. Can someone spell them phonetically??
Excuse the fact that I’m a moron, please 🙂 Haha.
Edit: I’m from South Carolina and to me, bag rhymes with flag. I don’t know how else it would be pronounced, but I’m interested in the difference.

With a short a.
I’ve lived in a variety of places and never heard anyone pronounce it with a long a.

@CarolinaCola: A “long a” is when the pronunciation sounds like the name of the letter itself.

@MlleBrielle: Well, anywhere you go, those two will rhyme, but different regions say it different ways. The long A is very Wisconsinite, most places use short A.
@CarolinaCola: short A is like “apple” and long A is like “acorn”

@Mrs.KMM: Gahh, then I think I voted wrong. Because I definitely don’t say it “bayg,” which to me sounds like an “a” being pronounced like it sounds within the word.

@galloway111: Okay, yeah. I say it with a short a, then.
Thanks for the clarification.

@CarolinaCola: If you do not say “bayg”, then you say it with a short a.
“Bayg” would be with a long a.
ETA: You beat me to it! 🙂
