I would pronounce it similar to Madeline.

Ah-duh-line. I speak a Great Lakes American English dialect, if that helps at all. I would pronounce it Ah-de-lynn only if it was spelled Adelin.

Hyperventilate:  Ah! The same conundrum. Mah-de-line or Mah-duh-lynn?

I am originally from the Midwestern US, and I would choose the first option.

None of your options; rather, Adda-leen (like the character on Big Love!)

MattieK:  Yes, it is a French name and that is how  it should be pronounced,  properly speaking , though others may go for the “line”  ending.

I would pronounce it as Ad-uh-lynn just because I like that name and that’s what I first think when I see it written out. I actually wasn’t aware that it was more commonly pronounced Ad-uh-line with the Adeline spelling. I probably still won’t change it because I don’t like the spelling of Adelyn but has anyone ever seen it spelled Adelin?

I personally know three little Adeline s and I don’t even have very many friends. Way too trendy.

My name is Adeline and how I introduce myself to people is “Hi, my name is Adeline, like Madelyn without the M”. I don’t go by Ade-LINE, nor do I like it. 🙂

My great grandmother was named Adeline – add uh line. I loved it for a little girls name but this exact issue has made me reconsider. No offense, but I detest the name pronounced add eh lynn – maybe because the name is so personal to me or maybe just because I see them as completely different and it irks me when someone butchers them.

Also, where I’m from Caroline and Carolyn are distinctly different – I’ve never actually heard someone mispronounce those. I would’ve thought the song “Sweet Caroline” sorted it out. Also, in the US Carolina is pronounced with a long ‘i’ so I just figured people followed that train of thought.

As a side note, I always believed that Madeline was different from Madeleine. I always thought Madeline was a more Americanized version pronounced mad uh lynn and everyone I’ve known or heard of that spelled it Madeleine was either French or using a more commonly French version pronounced mad uh line.
