For those of you who go the lyn route, would you also pronounce the name Caroline the same way?
For those of you who go the lyn route, would you also pronounce the name Caroline the same way?
I pronounce Madeline like “Mad-uh-line” (“line” rhyming with “fine”), and I pronounce Madelyn like “Mad-uh-lynn” (like the name Lynn).
To me, they are two distinct names, and I think it’s best to choose the spelling that matches your desired pronunciation. It just makes sense to pronounce “line” like the word “line” and “lyn” like the name Lynn. I don’t understand the point of spelling the name Madeline only to pronounce it like Madelyn. I use the line/lyn distinction for all names with that ending too (e.g. Caroline versus Carolyn).
Another option for Madeline is Madeleine, which would be pronounced Mad-uh-lenn. I think that’s a very pretty and unique spelling and pronuncation.
That’s my name, and I pronouce it like Mad-ah-lyn, as do most other Madeline’s I know. That said, hardly anyone ever calls Madeline anyway. I go by Maddie (or Mads) most of the time. 😛
I’m flip-flopping between Madeline and Caroline, but I prefer both to be pronounced with the hard “line” sound. I was just wondering what most default to, and if my hypothetical child would spend her life correcting people.
Timshel: I would default to pronouncing Caroline with a hard -line. As I mentioned before, my SIL’s name is spelled this way but pronounced “Carolyn,” and she is constantly correcting people. She even considered legally changing the spelling of her name when she was in her 20s.
Hm, so it seems Caroline is a much safer choice than Madeline with regards to how you want it pronounced.
I voted “Mad-ah-line.”
Its my best friends middle name and that’s how she and everyone else pronounces it.
Timshel: Mad – ah – line
Like the little French girl with the hat 🙂
