I saw my hairstylist today for highlights and a trim. Cost was $150 and I tipped $20 thinking that was generous. When I left, I thought about it and realized it’s not even 15%! I feel like such a jackass. Do you usually tip a set amount or percentage? Should I go back and give her more?

I usually tip $20 too and my hair costs about the same. Maybe I’m being rude too! It’s such an expensive service that I just assumed $20 was fine….

I always tip at least 20% for salons/spas.

I try to tip at least 15-20%. I used to work as a stylist and it really depends on how the stylist gets paid honestly. I used to work for minimum wage, so even if the service was $150, if I only spent 2-3 hours on it, I would only make 20-30$ on that service without the tip. That being said, some stylists make commission/rent a chair so the amount of money they make on a service depends.

I always tip 20%. But then again, I use to work as a stylist. My average tip is 20%, but if I have exceptional service(hair, food, etc) I’ll go above that.

Good to know! Growing up, my mom would always tip a flat $10 no matter the service (she’s extremely frugal) so I didn’t even realize you should tip a percentage until a few years ago. I’m thinking I need to go back and tip her more! I just wasn’t thinking.
