If I’m gonna be chopping and cooking them, I usually skip the wash. It drives Fiance a little crazy when I’m shaking garden dirt off the potatoes and he’ll tsk and wash them for me. Just don’t see the point when I’m cooking them/frying them/baking them! At the most, I use hot water and a brush to get the dirt off, I don’t think I’d ever spend money on a product for it!

The best way to wash your veggies is to actually fill a bowl, (or a clean sink) with enough salted water to not only cover them but to allow them to float so that sediment can fall to the bottom. I am a Chef and always wash my veggies this way, you need to make sure that you do not disturb the water too much so that the dirt does not re-deposit itself on your clean veggies. Make sure that you have a brush that is dedicated to ONLY washing veggies and keep it clean when it’s being stored. You do not want to know how many pathogens can hide in them if they are not properly cared for.

When I get storebought veg I usually use soap and water, or peel them. For veg I get from the garden or farmers market I usually just rinse. I always peel conventional potatoes–they use a lot of pesticides on those bad boys and those are pretty hard to remove.

I’ve never heard of the salt water but am intrigued. The idea of no soap residue sounds good. Why salt?

@MsJeep23: Salt will help to kill any bugs or parasites that are found on the vegetables. I would never use soap to clean vegetables, I would be more scared of the possible contamination from chemical residue left behind by the soap than I would about any other possible physical contaminants that may be found on them.

@Mrs.Goguen: Cool, thanks! Yea, the soap residue always has given me the heebies. It can give you the major runs!
