I found a gerbil in my apartment’s stairwell and at this point I’m fairly certain no one is going to claim it. Can I take it back to a pet store? I don’t know where it came from but it’s friendly. I also don’t know anyone who wants it. Well other than the cat. And my cat knows how to open all the doors in the apartment and is eventually going to figure out how break into the makeshift rodent holder in the bathroom. So I’d like to get rid of the thing before my cat eats it. I mean I’d just feel awful about saving it only to find it ripped to shreds in my living room.
Any tips to get rid of the gerbil?

Do shelters take gebrils?

I would call the shelter and see if they take gerbils. If not, post on craigslist in the lost and found to make sure no one is looking for it. Maybe put up a sign in your complex just to be safe. It could be some little kids pet.

@NoOneYouExpect: Doh. That’s a tough one. I think a shelter might take it. If not, craigslist maybe?

Humane society. They usually have a section for small pets like that.

Get a snake? j/k
I know the SPCA shelter here has small animals, including gerbils. The US seems to have a much wider range of shelters, so maybe there’s one specific to small animals in your area?

The secret to keeping gerbils with cats is to get a screen top with locking clips! HOURS of kitty fun!

@NoOneYouExpect: aw did you knock on doors and ask if its theirs?

I left a note on all the doors in and our of the building and knocked on the doors of the immediate neighbors. No one wants to claim it. I just called the shelter and they’ll take it if no one comes to claim it from me in 5 days.
@trueblue14: Yeah my makeshift container is clear so the cat has broken into the bathroom a couple of time already to torment the gerbil. I have no interst in keeping it though.

@trueblue14: We essentially did this with a fish. MY cat LOVES the fish.

if the shelter does not take them I know the local petstores (not like petco, a private place) always took them back
