If you are purchasing from a private person through paypal, they will send you an invoice and you will need to pay before they ship it, unless they have agreed to other terms. If the person you are purchasing from agrees to let you pay a deposit you can do that, but I doubt they would do that. Most people want the money up front before they ship the item(s). If you get the item and it is not as described, you can open a dispute with paypal. They will do an ivestigation and if they find in your favor, you will be refunded.

I would try and escrow site if you want to pay once you receive.  Paypal does have some guarantees but you will have to read about them on the site.  They are more than willing to answer all your questions if you call the 800 number on the site.  They are located in my hometown and I use them for most if not all my online transactions.

I’m a huge fan of paypal myself.  One more note, make 100% sure that the seller gets a shipping confirmation number for the dress.  I would even suggest having it shipped at least Priority, but even better Express or UPS (insured of course).  That way you can avoid any issues with the parcel “getting lost”.  It is worth the extra $$$ to not have to wonder where the package is or if they even sent it!  I bought my dress online as well, and it’s a great option as long as you take the necessary steps to protect yourself!  : )
