I think it’s a bit too much. My first impression, I found this to be a black tie dress as a guest.

It’s beautiful, but way too much for the occasion.

I think it’s too much unless the attire is specifically stated as black tie.

This looks like a black tie dress to me.  If it hasn’t been specified as black tie I think you will be overdressed.

Get it! !! It’s not too dressy!  What’s that mean anyways?  It’s a wedding! When else would you sport  a gorgeous number like that?  It’s not white and not ivory,  therefore totally appropriate , unless her wedding is a backyard barbeque or a stable/barn/jeans and t-shirt kind of affair. To a recent friend’s wedding  I wore a black floor length gown covered from head to toe in crystals and sequins.  I was the best dressed guest that night,  but I would rather look great than wear some mediocre dress just to fit in.  Go get it bee! Nobody would confuse you with the bride anyways

Unless it’s a church hall in like italy or rome, you will be very overdressed. Most of them look like nicer gymnasiums from highschool.

That is stunning!! But I agree with other PP, too dressy unless the wedding is specifically black tie.

How about something like this:

I think it’s a little too dramatic for a church hall reception. Gorgeous though!

Do you know how formal the brides dress is?

It’s a wedding. You’re supposed to be dressed up and unless it is a backyard barbecue, I don’t think it will be too much. I love to dress up at every opportunity possible. Also, since it is high/low, it is versatile. if you want it, get it.

I think it is really pretty and would be fine for church but migth be too much for reception.  Two suggestions 1) ask the bride 2) cut the back from a hi-lo to straight shorter — then the lenght is more casual while having the elegant color and design.

Dogmummy:  It is a gorgeous dress! But I agree that it is too dressy for the wedding you describe. I think it would work fine though if you change the hem to a straight hem and do away with the high low hem. That would be an easy change for any home sewer or certainly any seamstress.

You could even make yourslef a wrap with the leftover fabric.
