No not at all. In fact I was at my venue a couple weeks ago and they are already booked through 2013 and all of early 2014. So to get primo picking it appears the early bird gets the worm so to speak.

On that note when I first visited my venue in January 2011 right after we got engaged I thought I had time to decide. I was shocked to learn that my venue was filled up through April 2012 with only a few dates left in May 2012 (which is what I was hoping for). By the time I called a couple days later I only had one Saturday and two Fridays left to choose from. I was very grateful I listened and planned ahead. 🙂

I booked 14 months in advance and still couldn’t get a saturday…..anywhere. So i’d very much recommend making a decision as early as possible!

We made a tentative booking for our venue a couple of months ago, and the wedding is in July 2013. At that stage they only had 2 available Saturdays for the entire European summer of 2013. I’ll be finalising the booking when I go up to Sweden in June this year (we live in Australia) – they only made an exception because we live overseas and they understood that I wanted to see the venue myself before putting down the deposit (really nice of them). So yeah, about a year ad a half out.

Seems like things are just as crazy here in Australia, so I don’t think it’s weird at all that you’re thinking of booking a place 2 years out. Good luck!

I would totally book a venue as soon as you find one you love! We booked a year in advance and got the absolute last saturday available for like 3! I would also look into booking photographers as early as possible…I thought we had time and even with 10 months to go (when I started really looking), most of them were already booked =/

To answer your question – Yes, it is totally ridiculous…but necessary most of the time.  We booked our venue 15 months in advance.  I tried to book a few florists with 9 months notice and they were booked up already – which was when I decided to not use a formal florist shop.  On the other hand, we just ordered our dessert buffet items like a week ago, so it’s really hit or miss.

Not in Chicago, or I guess, most urban areas, where space is limited and demand is high. Our venue is now booked until March of 2014. We booked the last date in September 2013 back in January. It’s insanity! We booked caterer pretty quickly as well since we wanted to get an estimate and know how much we needed to save for our biggest cost. We are also booking our photographer in May or June (15 months out) because we want engagement pictures done in the summer.

we’re not engaged yet but have already booked our venue. we’ve booked it for September 2013. that place means so much to me, and there is no way i’d have it anywhere else. knowing that, my SO agreed to go and look at it and he fell in love with it, too!

We booked ours 18 months in advance. Supposedly the venue normally books 6 months in advance, so we got some looks, but we knew we wanted a specific room in the venue, and we got to choose any date we wanted (the whole month was open).

ETA: I think we will wait to book everything else (photographer, dj, florist) until we are less than a year out.

We booked our reception venue almost two years in advance. It was great! We got our choice of dates, and we were able to lock in 2009 prices for our 2011 wedding.

Definitely depends on your area. If things book up quickly then I would say book ASAP! This was one of the reasosn I wanted a longer engagement 18 months rather tha a 6 month one. I didn’t want to worry about dates being booked up. We booked our venue about 16 months out and we pretty much had all vendors locked in by 11 months. Even though we got married during an off season, it was close to the holidays so I wanted to make sure we locked our vendors in.

Nope, my date is 1.5 years away and we’re going in to pay the deposit for our Ceremony/Reception this Saturday, and starting to meet with videographers too.  If you know what you want, go ahead and book it or at least research!  There are places who don’t book until a year out or things like that, but at least you know that everyone else is in the same boat as you are of not being able to book.

We booked our church, reception venue, band/dj and photographer 18 to 14 months in advance. This was mostly because we would only be in Ireland once before the wedding, which was 14 months ahead of time. When we booked the hotel, 2012 was pretty open, but we booked in like Feb 2011.
