we booked early last month for June of 2012, so about 17 months ahead. I didn’t want such a long engagement, but earlier dates in April and May were starting to go. If I were you, I’d just start looking and book now- even if you can do it later, you might as well take advantage of the extra time and do it early, since it’s got to get done anyway.

I think it depends on the venue. We booked 2 years in advance and our top two dates were unavailble at our venue. That being said, there are plenty of places you can book only months in advance. I have friends who have planned weddings in 4 months and another in 6.

We booked about a year and a half in advance, it was the first real wedding thing we did and I LOVE IT

Yeah I booked mine about a year in advance also.

We booked our venue 8 months in advance. The venues get swept up fast so you have to get it while you can.

We booked our reception venue 11 months in advance.
8 months should be enough time, provided you aren’t trying to get married at a super busy time.

We booked 10 months in advance.. I think it really depends on your area/how popular your venue is. Our is very popular and we couldn’t get any dates in the summer except for Fridays by that point… hence, we are having a Friday wedding (and saving $2000 right from the start with discounted vendor prices)! 🙂 A friend of mine booked 8 months out somewhere else and was fine, though.

We booked ours 13 months in advance; but 8 months should be fine for most venues (assuming they aren’t super popular ones). Also, if you are flexible on dates and not going for a specific date, that should help too.

@Claudia30: It really depends on when you would like to get married. Busy season is between May-October typicially and you should start looking at least 8-12 months in advance. If you’re looking at off peak season, it should be relatively easy to find a venue even a few months before your preferred date

We booked ours 17 months in advance. It just ended up this way because we got engaged in December and wanted a summer wedding with at least one year to plan.
I don’t see anything wrong with 8 months before although it’s nice to get a heads start if you are looking for a specific weekend or popular venue.
