I’m getting married in August 2015, so I have quite a bit of time before the wedding. But I’ve heard that the fall is the best time to purchase a dress because of sales. I was thinking of starting to shop in September/October and making sure to purchase by December. What do you guys think? How long did you search for your dress, and how long in advance did you start looking? How soon is too soon?!
Also, did you try on a lot of dresses at a lot of different stores, or did you know it was the one after trying on just a few?
I really would like to take my time and try on lots of different styles to see what looks best on me. Although I’m really leaning towards a mermaid style with lace.

I’m getting married 08/2015 as well!
I couldn’t resist shopping early so I have already found my dress, but giving yourself 8+ months will be more than enough time to order, receive and alter your dress! Best of luck dress shopping – it’s fun
I went to a total of 6 bridal salons over the course of a few weekends and when I tried my dress on – I knew (I had seen a pic online prior)

futureladyharvey: I bought my dress 9 months before my wedding, which is perfect because once its cleaned and altered it will be ready one month before my wedding. I scheduled several apointments in one day and ended up picking the first dress at the first store I went to. I still tried on others after that and went to 3 other stores that day, since I still wanted the whole dress shopping experience and wanted to make sure I wouldn’t have any regrets. I think I ended up trying on about 15 dresses that day, all different shapes and styles.
I looked at many dresses and designers online as soon as I got engaged and had my mind set on a specific style as well, lace dress with crystals and a tulle skirt, but I tried several on that looked a lot like my “dream dress” and none of that gave me the wow feeling. The dress I chose I tried on at my sister’s insisting and was nothing like I had pictured.
I suggest trying on at least one dress of each silhouette (ballgown, mermaid, a line, etc) and being open to all different styles. You really can’t tell if you like a dress until you see it on you.

kmartinez: missmzdh: Thank you both for being so helpful! It sounds like buying by December would be the best choice. However, if I find something sooner, then that’s okay too haha!

futureladyharvey: dress was bought 7 months before the wedding but it just didn’t feel right, it’s now 6 weeks before my wedding & I’ve found the right dress! Choose carefully!!

Im also an 8/15 bride. 8-1-15 to be exact. I went shopping three times and have chosen my dress…it will be ordered the end of July. I chose a mermaid with beaded lace and buttons down the back.

futureladyharvey: I bought mine about ten months in advance because it was on sale (in the fall!), it did go on sale this spring, but not as much and would have been much harder to locate in my color and size. I say if you found the one you love and it is a great price go for it!

I went in October, exactly 9 months before my July wedding. But I waited a couple weeks to actually buy it because my dress was on a trunk sale at the salon at the beginning of November, which was a big help. If you have particular designers that you are interested in, I would definitely recommend searching for trunk shows they might have in your area. I think this was a great timeline for me; by ordering my dress in November, it actually arrived in the middle of March. Then I waited before getting alterations in mid-May. Alterations have take a little longer than I expected but, all told, I had my dress ready to go a month before the wedding. I think your timeline sounds totally doable!

I’m an 8/15/15 bride, and my dress was bought this past March after my mom and I both loved it at a bridal show (which secured us a nice discount too). It’s nice to have that out of the way, and to be able to do little things at a time.

- Wedding: June 2013 - Upstate NY
I bought a dress off the rack in October for my June wedding. No alterations needed. I guess I could have purchased it in like May haha!

I too bought my dress about 9 months in advance for my 3-21-2015 wedding. I just need to take it to get altered. I opted to have my own person do the alterations instead of the store. By The Way Excuse the messy room– I have been home sick all weekend doing nothing.

futureladyharvey: I bought my wedding dress exactly a year in advance. I only visited two stores and tried on maybe 10-12 dresses total. Found my dress at the second store and knew I loved it. Tried on a few after just to compare and none came close. Mine is below!
