I am a bridesmaid in my friends wedding. She recently told me that she wants to get the bridesmaids together and go dress shopping this month. The reason I find this a bit crazy is because she doesn’t have a venue or even a wedding date set. She told me she’s looking at April or May of next year, which means we are dress shopping 14 months in advance! Does this seem too early, or is it normal to look at dresses this soon? When did you have your bridesmaids purchase their dresses?

@Bichon Frise: over a year in advance is a little early, especially since she doesn’t have a venue set. She may change her mind based on when/where/season it is.
That being said, when I have been a Bridesmaid or Best Man I have gone shopping with the Bride to see what was out there for fun, well in advance. Never purchased though. I purchased 6 months in advance for a Jim Hjelm dress that took a while to come in. David’s Bridal took maybe a month and a half for their Bridesmaid or Best Man dress to come in.

@MissCallieJean: She said we were looking just for ideas, but I’m still a little worried. I know how pushy the salespeople can be, so she might end up being talked into purchasing the dresses now. Either way, I’m not sure how a person can know what to look for when the main wedding details aren’t worked out.

I think it’s too early. We’re getting married in March of next year and thinking of shopping for dresses this fall.

it’s a little crazy. does she have her dress yet? at this point she should look at various styles to see what she likes. bm dresses are also released in seasons just like wedding dresses. new ones will come out. my girls bougth about 5 months before the wedding. i was fine with off the rack but they insisted on ordering real bm dresses.

I’ve been a bridesmaid once before, I think we ordered in Jan/Feb for a July wedding?? But the bride & I were window-shopping them back in the previous Sept. I’m going to be bridesmaid again Sept 2013 – we’ve all looked online & posted online our ideas re colours/styles/labels etc. But we’ve not officially looked.
That said, I’m not even officially engaged yet (we’ve agreed to June 2014 & have told family that date) but somehow had a bridesmaid dress shopping trip with my sister (who will be my MOH)!! I want blue for the Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses, told my sister I’d seen some nice blue dresses at a shop. Next thing I know, she meets my out shopping & we’re in a boutique looking at colour swatches while the shop assistant is pulling out all the styles my sister likes!
It was crazy – bless my sis for being keen, but I’m wanting to go the budget mismatched ‘just wear a blue dress’ route, but she was diving right in there!!

That is way too early. Most bees would say that’s too early for the bride herself to get the dress. Does she have a good reason?? I mean, I don’t get the point when there’s no for sure time of year, venue, style, etc.

It seems too early, but maybe she’s just being extra careful. Maybe you girls can shop now, and order later?

Hmm. We did ours about nine months before the wedding, but I had a longer engagement and had set my date and chosen my venue more than a year before we even started shopping.

That is really early. For my wedding we purchased the Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses in April for our November wedding.

She’s the bride, let her be as crazy as she wants to be. You’re there to support her and all her craziness
We looked at dresses 10 months out and we bought them that day for my wedding. I’d already had my venue booked for a good 8 months though, I don’t like to procrastinate so I got things over with ASAP.

We’re getting married March of next year and are looking with BMs at the end of April. I’m only doing it that early because one Bridesmaid or Best Man is leaving the country for grad school in the fall, and two live over 1000 miles away. This is the one chance I have to get the four in the same area at once!

Maybe s he just wants to look at dresses and try them on rather than order them immediately.
I asked my BMs to buy their dress just under 3 months before the wedding but they all bough their dresses early so that was a relief

That’s way too early. Bridesmaids can gain weight, lose weight, get pregnant AND have the child in that amount of time, and any of those things can bring significant body changes.
