The place we’re thinking of going with seems great, but they aren’t super formal in their dealings with us. I asked for a proposal to be written up, and it isn’t specific and doesn’t explain a lot of things that I think need to be explicitly stated. How would you deal with this? Does it matter?

I would get everything written down exactly how you want it at your wedding. I have been fighting tooth and nail with my venue about them changing our contract and wanting almost 1000$ more in fees and them not letting us use the kitchen and whatnot. They are not honoring their what their original contract states and so just to be safe I would get all the details in the contract. I wouldn’t mind them being laid back but make sure everything is agreed upon and in writing just from personal experience!

Mine isn’t too formal either, despite it being a formal venue and wedding. When I asked her for menu descriptions so I could have menus printed, she wrote that we’d have “seasonal assorted vegetables” – this really pissed me off for some reason. Lol. Then she said we should cut our own cake. UGH. Lol.

Ours is very clear cut about exactly what is include (even the food description) and everything is broken down into line items and quantities, down to the exact number of forks, tables, and servers. This is very helpful at the last minute when you need to ensure that all your bases are covered, such as whether you have enough tables for your guestbook/gifts/etc. Plus, if you have any problems at your event, you will know whether you goofed and it was never included or if they goofed and you need a refund.

I cut 2 caterers from my list because they were just too laid back (read: unprofessional. Did not get back to me in a timely matter or at all. Flaked on appointments, etc.)
My preferred caterer is VERY professional. She spells out EVERYTHING and breaks it down for us. She gets back to us quickly and is on top of everything. I haven’t hired her yet because 1. she is kind of out of our budget and 2. her chicken needs to be tweaked as it was too dry. We’ll see how it goes. Seeing as she is the front runner I may end up going with her and tweaking our budget to make it work.
