My appointment is at 10am. Can I just chug water a couple hours before and be set? I wake up at 6am every day so would 4 hour hold be better? Or do I need to hold it all night long and all morning until post-appointment?

My OB said to drink 12oz of water one hour before, and not to pee after you finish it!

They told me to have a full bladder for ALL my ultrasounds (even after 30 weeks! Insane!)
I learned to drink enough that my bladder was full but I was still comfortable enough. I hated the feeling of wanting to pee myself.

@kenziemt: You don’t need to be so extreme with it, honestly. 🙂 About an hour and a half before I drank quite a bit of water. It is possible to have your bladder too full as well, so keep that in mind!
They actually wound up only taking a few shots using the abdominal ultrasound, and then had me empty my bladder to do a transvaginal ultrasound. At that stage baby is just so small they may need to do an internal to get what they want. Granted, mine was at 8 weeks, but I’ve known people up to 13 weeks that get a t/v ultrasound instead of abdominal.

Awesome. This I can do! I was worried I would have to hold my pee ALL morning which I just don’t see as possible!

I’ve never been told to drink water before, even in 2004 when I was pregnant with my first. I always give my urine sample first, then see doc or u/s after.

Lol! Agreed with pp’s just drink a glass of water or two about 30-60 minutes before. The guy that did mine kind of scoffed when I told him I had a full bladder and then had me empty it.

@kenziemt: I didn’t have any water instructons for my 12w routine u/s or my 13w NT scan. For my 20w I was told to empty my bladder 90 minutes before the appointment & then 60 minutes before the appointment to drink 24oz of water and hold the pee until after the u/s. I’ve had other friends who had their doctors say just drink a big glass of water right before your appointment and you’ll be fine. I’m getting an u/s done at 32 weeks and they told me to do the 24oz 60 min before appointment again…I’m not going to lie I don’t think I can hold that many OZ in my bladder anymore w/out peeing myself 😉

I was never told to drink water before and in fact they always asked if I wanted to pee first since they’d be pressing down on my abdomen. I’ve never heard of this.

@kenziemt: haha nope! That time they told me to drink before hand I went to the bathroom 4x within 20 minutes of my appointment and my bladder was STILL near full.
My anatomy scan they didn’t make me do it though. I think it just depends on the doctor, and also how new the equipment is. If the machine is one of the new ones, they can see a lot more even without your bladder being full.
