Too much DHA can be bad–I think you should call your obgyn and see if you need a supplement (like fish oil). I’d imagine if everybody needed more, it’d be in the vitamins already

it might already be in some of the food you are eating, other than fish. my milk and eggs both have it in them. Fiance & i both take a flax seed/fish/borage oil supplement, it has 80mg of DHA in each soft gel (serving is 2), i just take one (i’m also not preg, so i don’t know what the rec amount it for pregnant women) since it’s in other things. too much of a good thing is never a good thing, but i don’t think adding it until you talk to your dr would be bad. i haven’t read it, but i love DR oz, he has a pregnancy book, & i bet he would address this. side note: did you read the latest consumer reports on mercury? i knew pregnant woman & small children were supposed to limit eating some types of fish, especially tuna, but they suggest not having it at all. not trying to be one of those people to scare pregnant women, just thought i’d throw it out there because people try to eat more fish to get more DHA.

My prescription prenatal has a separate pill entirely just for DHA (I take Duet DHA Balanced).  I would venture to say you are fine with your gummy vitamin until you see your doctor in a few weeks and then discuss that with him/her then.  The fact that you are aware that you are pregnant this early and taking some form of vitamin supplement is a great thing so I wouldn’t get too excited about it until you see your OB.

I don’t think that is enough DHA. My prenatal (One A Day which comes with the prenatal vitamin and a seperate DHA pill) includes 440 mg of the Omega fatty acids. Here’s some info below I just found online. It says you should consume at least 250 mg. Perhaps you can find a seperate DHA pill to take in conjuction with your prenatal vitamin?

Edit: OK, so just like I figured, all experts recommend different amounts. Some say to take at least 330 mg. But it looks like the consensus is at least 200-300mg, if not more.  I would check with your doctor.

@ejs4y8: There are a lot of really important vitamins that aren’t in multivitamins in “enough” quantities because they are very expensive. Not sure of this is one of them (biotin is, as are certain forms of more bioavailable iron), but “if it’s not there, I must not need it as much” is not a valid way to think about it. A cost-benefit ratio for the company producing the pills is the reasoning behind it – not your health (especially since vitamins have not been conclusively proven to be absorbed and distributed within the body effectively)

Mine is the generic form of Jenn23’s so I have a 2nd pill as well.  And crayfish is right.  My prenatals don’t have the amount of calcium that you’re supposed to take while pregnant (and calcium seems like a no-brainer to me).  These were recommended by my doctor.  Also, there is some recent research that shows that DHA/EPA may not be helpful at all (which I also brought up to my doctor).  She said that there has been enough research to show that it’s beneficial to adults (even if this one piece of research re: babies is true) so she still said to take it.

@candicemcc: I hadn’t heard of the new research until you mentioned it above, but I just googled and found the recent report (below). I had heard such good things about DHA in the past. Well, at least it does still show that DHA can help prevent premature births! And it can’t hurt to take it. I will definitely still take it before and during pregnancy.

@candicemcc: Part of the problem is that some ingredients, like Calcium take up too much space.  That’s why typical Calcium pills are so big.  With one prenatal I bought (accidentally) you had to take 4 large pills a day!

Mrs Green Grass, that’s part of the reason I hate calcium pills.  They’re the only pills that make me gag.  Good times.  That’s why I went with gummies!

I wasn’t able to take the DHA prenatal vitamin that my doc gave me, make me sicker than a dog.  I found Dr. Greene’s prenatal and it was wonderful! I had a ton of energy and even with my medical problems (which put me at high risk) my pregnancy went well and my baby girl is perfectly healthy and wonderful.  My doc was just fine with the prenatal I found instead of the one he pushed.  He said the folic acid was the biggest thing to worry about regardless of anything else. Just a thought.

@harmonyeee: I’m glad you posted this, as it inspired my research on DHA. If I were you, I would take the extra DHA, but based on the article/research that just came out, it doesn’t sound as if it is super necessary. But definitely better to be safe than sorry, right? See what your doctor says. 🙂

Oh not to talk you out of anything, but to make sure you see that it’s not the end of the world if you have DHA or not.  My daughter also did not have formula with DHA and she walked at 9 months, talked at 8 months and at 18 months she is putting together sentences.  Not trying to offend anyone in the least.  Just saying talk to your doctor but do your research too.  Just don’t stress either way until then!

I’m really glad to hear a lot of people don’t think DHA is super important.  I got the prenatals that are two pills (one prenatal, one DHA) and I am constantly burping up fish tastes.  I don’t have morning sickness but this is bad enough to make me want to puke.  I read you can try to store the DHA pills in the freezer to cut back on the smell/taste but I think I may just skip them until I talk to my Dr. more.
