Wow! I didn’t realize how uncommon it was to be friends with coworkers! Almost all of my friends in my current city are either coworkers, or were introduced to me through coworkers. We’ve been to each others’ weddings and regularly hang out on the weekends. That said, for me, it took some time… it wasn’t like I started my job and BOOM, instant friends! It all happened organically, as we weathered work storms together and celebrated good times at happy hours and slowly got to know each other. I specifically avoid being friends with the coworkers I know get involved with office gossip, etc – fortunately where I work those people are few and far between, and there’s not much to gossip about anyway :).

When I’m at work I very much want to fit in and be liked (regardless of how I deep down feel about my coworkers). But I don’t necessarily want to see them outside of work unless I REALLY like them back! I have been in the workforce since I was 15 (I am 27 now) and I can count one one hand the number of coworkers who have ‘crossed over’ to my personal life.
It’s a trait I inherited from my Dad. His belief is “don’t sh*t where you eat”. While he makes it his business to be well liked and respected at work, he needs that work life/personal life seperation. I guess I do too.
