Wait…. WHAT?!?! Pretty sure around here EBT SNAP cards are ONLY for food. Of course…not that I really count the cart FULL of cokes and hunny buns to be food… I know there are plently of people who need and use their goverment benifits as they should, but it is so frustrating to see the people roll up in an escalade with their gucci bag and prada shoes buying food with food stamp cards. Oh and when their SO is behind them hauling out the wad of $100s to pay for their cart of beer and cigarettes. This is why I like the WIC program better, it is to get FOOD that is nutritionally sound and not a bunch of snack cakes.

I should also say there is NOTHING wrong with some junk food, I mean as a kid it would have been really boring to only have healthy food all the time, but when a women comes in with 4-5 kids and buys nothing but Ramen and Little Debbies… mild frustration ensues because I am also going to be paying when her kids get diabetes and need dialysis and all that fun jazz because they eat crap!

I thought food stamps were pretty tightly regulated in terms of what you can and can’t buy. So I’m very shocked and disappointed that some places allow them to be used for cigarettes

@ButterflyDoll:  i agree thats ridiculous. in ohio there is a bill trying to be passed about government services restrictions for example you must work 20 hours a week and try to pursue ur college degree (WHICH YOU GET TO DO FOR FREE!!) and you can’t be on it for more than 5 years. this doesn’t include food stamps but i just thought id add my displeasurement with the whole system. also we should drug test these people.. you want the governments help? u should be drug free and at least try to turn ur life around I work in the criminal justice system and i see way too many people use the system and waste my money

ahhh it felt good to vent(:

So I’m a loser and had to look up how in the world this could happen. It’s because there is two sides to the food stamps cards from the federal goverment. One is like FOOD STAMPS, the SNAP program that is JUST for food. The other is a cash portion, pretty sure the point is more for non-food essetials like napkins and soap and that kind of thing, but it works like cash…so you can use the goverment money for it. Wow. The system is BROKE!!

I wouldnt judge her for this, you never know the full circumstances of her life. Smoking is often a coping mechanism for bigger issues

Wow, that’s crazy! I do not think cigarettes are a necessary expense.

I’m sure the state probably puts her food stamps and her welfare on the same card. Only food can be bought with the food portion but I think they can actually get cash back for the welfare part.

No judgement from me, just what I’ve observed.

Personally, I am not indignant or upset in any way about this issue. I’m thankful that I have a good job and don’t have to subject myself to the kind of humiliation and degradation those in need often suffer.

Also im pretty sure that is state regulated so it depends on the state. Texas is more conservative so it doesn’t suprise me it is tighter regulated there. but in PA if im recalling correctly is usually a pretty liberal state so they prob have less regulation on government services like food stamps

@teabiscuit:  i shouldn’t be paying for someone who is 2 poor to pay for food but can use it for cigs.

I was a checker for 7 years i have had them buy beer to crab legs with food stamps and it sickens me. It’s for food not for you to have high end meals or get wasted. The one that had to piss me off the most was i had these guys come in and buy beer paid cash left, then they came back like 20 mins later high and get chips…guess what they payed with food stanps. I wanted to flip out u have money for beer and pot but not food…WOW!!!

We had a lady come through at my old job buying $150 worth of lobster with her food stamps! It was still food, but come on.
