When I was in a position in which I interviewed applicants I found that there were several who were late and even better, they didn’t seem to care! I was also stood up by applicants. No email, no phone call to let me know that they couldn’t make the interview/changed their mind.

If I knew I was going to be any later than 5 minutes early, I would call.  Anything more than 15 minutes late, I would beg to reschedule,

There was this one time when I was job hunting…  I was on my way to the interview, I had given myself extra time so I should have been 15-20 minutes early.  I was in the car, drinking coffee, I hit a pothole and my coffee spills all over my white shirt. Oh No!!!  Can’t go to an interview like that. So I called the guy, I told him that my fathers car had broken down and needed a ride/jump (something like that) and was there any possible way to reschedule.  He asked how long I needed and I told him an hour.  I rushed to the first store I could find, bought a new shirt and make it to the interview 45 minutes later.   Guess what?  He ended up offering me the job.

I would never be late.  But if I did, it’d be b/c I was dying or something and I’d definitely call.  I always go where I need to interview BEFORE so I don’t end up in this situation.

Haha this post was funny to me because I was 2 hours late to my very first job interview, even though I had left plenty of time to get there early. I was taking the train into the city and something had happened, and I was stuck on the train. I did call, and it was no problem to just come in when I got there. I wound up getting the job (and am still there). Sometimes there are just things you cannot control!!

When I was 24, my car broke down on the way to an interview.  I called the HR guy to ask him to reschedule (had to use a payphone, before the days of cell phones).  The gentleman offered to come and get me and called my dad for me, he had to hear the stress in my voice.  He not only gave me the job, but he arranged for his mechanic to pick up the car and fix it.

@tksjewelry: Whoa! That is so sweet.

If I was that late to a job interview, I would just not go…I would be humiliated. But its one of my fears also, I’m always 25 minutes early to everything.

Funny Story:

We had a friend who was running really late for a job interview. There was a major freeway accident and he showed up over 1 1/2 hours late. To make matters worse, he accidentally left his phone at home and couldn’t call.

He walked in the door covered in sweat and in a panic and said to the receptionist “I’m so sorry. I’m late for my interview with Mr. Smith” The receptionist looked at my friend and said “Mr. Jones, your interview was scheduled for yesterday.”

The good news is that they still took him for the interview and he actually got the job!

I always get to interviews early so that I have buffer time for traffic or getting lost.

I would NEVER not show up but I would call immeadiately upon realizing I would be at all late and if I was going to be really late, try to reschedule without leaving too bad of a taste in the interviewers mouth.

I had a job interview one time and I was running early. Then of course there was a MAJOR accident that shut down the highway and all the back roads were backed up. I called right then and there and they said it was okay because they had employees that were on their lunch breaks making the same call I was. I got there 3 hours later and still got the job.

I’d say like 20 minutes tops. You never know if it is in a big city there can be traffic, construction, one ways, rush hours, detours or just get plain lost trying to find it.

I was 30 minutes late to a job interview once because I got hit by a car. I bled all over their floor, they called my mom to come pick me up, and I got the job! It’s a pretty funny story looking back, but I was very stressed out the day of. I needed that damn job!

I can’t imagine being late with no call or not showing up. If you can’t do those things for the interview, what type of employee are you going to be? Good employees call (like the above posters). 🙂
