I’ve been married to my husband for almost two years (08/31/2013) and have yet to legally change my name. I plan(ned) on hyphenating it, but just never have gotten around to it. At this point I might just keep doing what I’m currently doing – using it socially, but legally staying with my maiden name. I thought I would feel like “less of a family” or less connected to him with a different last name, but honestly I don’t. I like having my own identity and since we live in my hometown I like the familiarity of my last name. It just seems right to me. So I’m still deciding I guess.
On a side note, the hubby doesn’t care either way – he’s offered to hyphenate too so we match. We’re talking about that too. People put so much pressure on the name thing and I think for both of us we just have bigger things to worry about. (Not that it’s not a big decision – but for us it just isn’t. We’ve always been a bit of a strange couple!)

I changed mine shortly after returning from our honeymoon. Where I live if you change it within 90 days it’s free, after 90 days there is a fee. I know the process where I live isn’t the easiest since I had to change it for 3 separate government documents.
Wow it’s been 3 years since OP posted, has your friend changed it yet?

I’ve been married since October, but I *finally* just changed my name this last Friday 😉 I got licensed in my field shortly after we got married (I had passed the exams but the licensing papers didn’t arrive until a month or two after the wedding) so that did sort of delay my process because it’s a pain to go through all that in addition to the regular avenues. I doubt I’ll get around to changing the deed on my house, etc but at least it’ll be changed with SS, DMV, banks, etc. Plus I kept debating how I wanted to change my name so that gave me time to settle into the idea of having two middle names and felt less like a loss of identity (middle maiden newlast) 🙂
