So, I’m trying to get a feel for two things: when to start looking (actually trying on dresses not just looking online) and how long it can take to find the right dress. I know it depends on the dress, but I thought it’d be interesting to do a poll on both.
Long= From the day of your first appointment to the day you bought is dress.
Early= How soon before your wedding was your first appointment to look at dresses.
Finally any regrets (starting too soon or too late)?

My first appointment was just about 12 months away from my dress. I live very far from my mom and wanted her to be part of the process as much as possible so I knew I couldn’t go every weekend. I ended up picking between the first dress I tried on at my first appointment and the dress I went to my second appointment specifically to see.
Had it not been for those two dresses I knew it would have taken me months and I knew the designers I liked the most typically needed 9 months to order.

I’m around 9 months away and I started looking but don’t intend to buy until 3-5 months out.

My wedding is in June of 2019, and I got my dress in April of last year… SO early, I know!
What happened was I started browsing for dresses online very soon after my engagement, just to look. But then I saw one that just felt perfect. I saw the picture and was like “this is my dress”
I went to the store and couldn’t try it on because their sample was way too small (I am plus sized!) but I got to see it in person. I tried on two other similar dresses that they DID have close to my size to try, but they just weren’t it. I knew the one I’d seen the pic of was it. So I ordered it that day, and when it came in I knew I’d made the right choice!

adreamdeferred : your dress is stunning!!!
I had one dress appointment that lasted maybe 1.5 hours or so and I purchased my dress at that appointment. I bought the dress a little over 12 months before the wedding because it took approx. 7 months for the dress to get in.

We hadn’t even set a date when I shopped for my dress haha. I knew I wanted a Hayley Paige gown and booked an appointment during a sample sale. I purchased my gown what ended up being 1 year and 4 months before my wedding. No regrets at all! I had my first alterations appt last night.

We got engaged on a Monday in October 2017. I went to David’s Bridal Tuesday but didn’t like anything. I went to two salons that Friday – found the dress I wanted at the second salon, but ordered it from the first song because they were a locally owned small business with great customer service. We got married in June 2018.

I had 5-6 appointments over the span of a month, but had been browsing online for months before that. I couldn’t find anything I liked in person so ended up ordering from Etsy. I started looking 11-12 months before the wedding, ordered my dress 10 months before.

Looked at tons of styles online and on Pinterest. Found one I loved. Went to the store and bought it that day.
This was 4 months before the wedding (short engagement)

I looked in the fall (November) for a June wedding. The dress I went with was custom so it took 5 months to come in and wasn’t “finished” with alterations until two weeks before my wedding. SO, I’d say depending on the type of dress you get, just make sure you have time to get it! Have fun!

I went end of May/beginning of June for a February wedding because I was visiting my family and there are WAY more stores where they live. I wasn’t intending on buying until I went back in September but found the “one” as a sample on my first visit.
They did have to make some phone calls to see if they would be able to get a dress finished in time in case I didn’t buy one off the rack and they only let me try on dresses that they were assured by the designers would be done in time.

I went dress shopping while visiting my parents for Christmas. We went to 5 different shops over a couple of days. I went back to my favorite shop a second time and bought my dress toward the end of that week. I started looking/bought my dress 8 months prior to my wedding.
The shop I ended up buying from was actually in the middle of a move when I first visited them and the owner assured me she had the perfect dress for me, just in at their new location and to come back on their first day open in the new building. I had their first appointment, was the first to try on my dress, and was their first sale at the new location.

We announced our engagement on 20-something of March. I bought my dress like a week later. Got married in September.
I went away from my favourite dress and went to another store and fell in love with something else.
