I was told it could take up to a year to leave my system and get pregnant. We are only just about to start TTC but I have been off the injections nearly 6 months and my cycle has been back to normal since about month 2 with a 26 day cycle. I also appear to be ovulating like normal too (I do the saliva ovulation test).

I think it depends on how your body reacts to coming off of the injection… Some people say they don’t get a period for 7-8 month after coming off which indicates no ovulation for that length of time. I on the other hand (and a few ladies I have chatted to on here) have had the seemingly “endless” period – luckily mine ended after 7 weeks but I know others have had theirs a lot longer (some into months :(). But once I stopped bleeding I tracked my cycle and got O symptoms and exactly a 26 cycle and it’s been the same ever since with O around CD11-13ish.

BUT in all my research (or you know googling hehe) I’ve heard of people getting pregnant on it. I think it’s the same as anything – you can’t control pregnancy at all and with that you can’t predict how long after the injection it will take, same as people who’ve only used non-hormonal methods can’t predict how long it will take them…

sorry for the long reply I hope that when you start TTC it is short and easy road for you.

ETA: some people on google were suggested by their drs to come off the injection and go onto the BCP a few months before they were ready to TTC as the pill can help relieve some of the symptoms of coming off the injection and helps kick start the cycle back to normal… I can’t vouch for it because I won’t use BCP (I don’t feel protected on it as I was a pill baby hehe) but it might be something to consider if you are worried about side effects of coming off the injection.

@ShellVee:  How long were you on the shot for? I’m looking at stopping it in May to TTc in October (BCP between those months) But now I’m kind of second guessing the idea of using the pill (to be honest, I want to use charting and avoiding O dates as my method of BC (if you can call it that) because quite frankly I want as much chance of getting pregnant as possible lol) It’s such a hard decision what to do during those months after the shot.

@BabyBrain:  I was on it for about 18 months all up. But talking to others there was no correlation between time on it to the side effects coming off. Some were on for 5-10 yrs no issues what so ever thou others had one injection and had no periods for months after. It’s a very unpredictable BC symptoms-wise. I think I was lucky that on it I thought it was awesome because the effects coming off it sucked :S

IF I could go back in time I would go on the pill after stopping depo just on the off chance it would have helped. But that said I stopped it nearly 7 months before we were TTC anyway so having a few months on BCP wouldn’t have concerned me because I could have weaned myself off the depo and the BCP well before we were ready to TTC 🙂 I say this thou because I have terrible iron levels and this was greatly affected by the 2 month long period I had – the exhaustion was worse than the other side effects really, so if the BCP stopped the period I would’ve been happier.

@ShellVee:  Oh that’s a great insight – I have appalling iron levels too, so it looks like BCP might be the way to go. I have an appointment with the dr next week anyway so I’ll chat to her. Though its not my usual dr, (she’s on maternity leave, lucky woman! lol) is it silly to say I want to wait until my dr comes back before TTC. She’s been through everything else with me – like the 3 or 4 times I have convinced myself I was pregnant and wouldnt believe otherwise no matter what the blood tests and ultrasounds said. lol.

I would suggest getting off the shot asap.  I have chatted with ShellVee about our experiences of coming off of depo (we are about two weeks apart of coming off the shot).  I have had crazy irregular periods/spotting and it’s driving me nuts.  In the last two months, I’ve had just 1 full week of no spotting/bleeding of any sort.  I had my annual gyno visit last week and she said it’s nothing out of the ordinary for the irregular bleeding to last 6 months to a year after stopping depo.  When you do stop the shot, I would recommend keeping a calendar in case you start spotting so you can see if there is a pattern.  It is different for everyone and I hope you have a better experience coming off of it than I have 🙂
