From getting pre approved to closing… January 15th to March 7th.  It was a very quick process for us.  Less than 2 months!

@Wonderstruck  Any idea why the bank wanted the 20% even after they pre-approved you? Ahh – reading this now made me crap my pants…we can’t afford to put that down.

@brittanym526  Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you! It is pretty unusual for that to happen, but DH and I have never had a loan before, both cars were paid for in full and our current home was purchased by his parents (again, in full) and then rented by us. So the lender the bank uses decided they wanted more than 5% down because then they don’t have to go through the lender and they just deal with the bank. Also had to do with the fact that we have a conventional loan rather than an FHA.

We made an offer in November, haggled back and forth about the price, got financing, agreed on a price, got the keys in January. If it hadn’t been for the haggling and the holidays, could have been done much quicker. However, we are slow shoppers so we spent about 2years before this picking the house/neighbrohood we wanted.

I guess I’d say, depends very much on how decisive you are. Many people just look at 3-4 houses and pick one, very easy. We looked at several hundred because we are crazy like that.
